Performance vs Quiet Tyres

Hi all

Thinking of changing to Aspec DB A500 but saw in a similar thread that the wet grip is poor.

Has any bros here used A500? Please give your views.

Spoke to a tyre shop retailer and he said that as long as do not speed above 100km, should be okay (but he did not mention whether in dry or wet condition)...have however heard that the tyres are quite quiet.

For driving and cornering, at what speed would A500 be able to handle?

Or any tyres to recommend that is okay in both wet/dry grip as well as noise?

Thanks.

Dunno why everyone says the Aspecs are so quiet, had a ride in my fren's car and thot it was pretty noisy. To make matters worse, Aspec DBs are known to be poor in the wet (where it matters most in terms of safety, IMHO). For excellent wet grip, Falken Azenis ST115 is the way to go. Can whack puddles at over 100knh and steering doesn't even twitch.

It's depend since some noise can transfer to cabin from the absorder, not just the tyre noise from tyre. Like my stock 18" actully no-noise, but when turning, I can hear the echo from the tyre to wheel edge.

Hi There!

I agree... ST115 is good value for money interms of wet grip and noise compromise.

I had that in my ex big back side Corona and now in my current car... serves me well!

Hi Guys,

Maybe a list below will help us rate various brand/model tyres in terms of the respective performance. Please help name the most suitable tyres in the following categories:-

Best overall grip (never mind about noise, this is for hardcore drivers):-

Best wet grip (never mind about noise, this is for hardcore drivers):-

Most silent (dun mind so-so handling, the quieter, the better):-

Been using the A500 for almost a year, quiet as compared to my previous Sumitomo rubbers, a colleague commented mine was much quieter than his ST115s... [nod]

Dry grip is okay for normal driving, can heard them screeching away when taking slip roads at > 60kph [shakehead]

Wet grip... sucks big time, e-braked at 50-60kph & skidded on a rainy day [shakehead][sweatdrop] Nowadays i never go any faster than 60kph on minor roads on a rainy day. On expressways, not more than 90kph [sweatdrop] ... keeping very far from the car in front of me!!! [bigcry]

Hi there,

I am using AspecDB A500 with R17/45/215. I found the tyres are quite good for wet and dry. This is because I think my car and my rims are heavy. If raining heavily and driving along those porous road and the road is clear, I could drive up to 120km/h(for small road, i do not drivee that speed whether it is rain or shine).

Again, my cornering is very lousy. I tried to corner; coming from SLE-> BKE to Bukit Panjang. At most, I could do it at 65km/h. I never try 70km/h. Without the strut bar, I have to go at less than 60km/h.

For comfort, I think that is a good buy.

Last time, when I had sunny, I changed my tyres to Aspec DB. My mum could notice the smoother ride.

Cheers

Sucker!

I feel that individual should look at his driving skills and needs first before making a judgement if the tires suit him/her or not.

aspecdb suits my needs, as I place comfort and quietness over performance (don't need it as my car does not have so much horses) as priority, and it certainly excels in the area!

having said that, I have been driving 120-140km/h most of the time during dry days, and 80-90km/h on rainy days and don't feel insecured anytimes. Of course, I make a point to keep few car length behind the cars infront of me, just as a safety precaution.

Actually, the heavy rims definitely help make a car more planted on a rainy day, and at high speeds...or both (high speeds on a rainy day).

My 16" Momos weigh about 24lbs each (I guestimate)....and when we went up to NS Highway, I was able to go at about 150-170 in heavy rain without feeling a loss of grip or control...... my car weighs only 1050kg (kerb weight), so the car's weight can be negated.

And aquaplaning resistance is very good as well...often going through large puddles on expressways at above 120.....no loss of steering...and lots of water splashing all around!

I think my Falken Ziex 326 have quite good water drainage...of course it could also be the size (205). Even when cornering in the wet...I don't find any oversteer even when driving hard...at most there's a controllable slip.....which is easily corrected by easing off the throttle

Previously drove my parent's 94 Elantra with 14" rims and brand new Michelin tyres (185), the model that was supposed to be good in the wet....managed to hit 150+ in the rain too (NS highway as well)....but aquaplaned badly when hitting patches of standing water.

However, the skidding is controllable, as it goes quite straight....and once I shed my speed to below 100, I could regain steering control.

I still believe in Falken tyres....and my next set should most likely be a Falken (ST115), unless some other brand/model has 215/40R16 which I am desperately searching for.

anyone?

Try AVS TW1 if they are still available in the mkt. I'm using them now and it seems to strike a good compromise between noise and comfort. [:)]
