Experience with CVT ?

Actually, the downshift does occur. It simply gives you the configuration which results in higher revs, and possibly more torque than your cruising speed. This is demonstrated by the DS mode in the Lancers today.

Something I've learnt so far. Increases in RPM does not equate to an increase in speed. The speed might not increase, but the torque will. With higher torque, it should be easier to increase speed, which is true in some sense in the CVTs today. Just don't compare it with a conventional Manual/Automatic gearbox.

hehe when i drove the cs2 lancer (mother's), i tried putting to DS n found that its only more rev happy, but the speed is like normal. or is it supposed to be when driving halfway in D, u pull it down manually to DS?

aiyah save all this trouble n get a manual lah. haha.

ya i understand that the CVT changes to the nearest gear ratio unlike AT/MT which has a set of 4/5/6 fixed ratios, but how does that explain the surge in rpm but no increase in spd?

??? In the recent Sepang adventure? I dunno. I missed that one. I know my friend's MAF blew though, which forced him to drive back from Sepang all the way to SG at 65km/h... ouch... sweatdrop.gif

should be the recent Sepang adventure but not sure it's inside Sepang or on the way back, I saw the pic of his car in the workshop, real bad, hopefully not total losssweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gif

I think the process of changing is not as fast as AT, so give the impression that engine is not doing anything. Also, if it is changing continuously, it makes the car seems behaving erraticly, where it maybe just adjusting for efficiency.

The DS is meant for pickup when you wanna overtake. sure. when you're overtaking a scooter lor... Heh. But after I changed my exhaust, filter and SAFC2, the car was a lot mroe responsive, even with CVT. The GDi engine is actually damn good. But the CVT spoils it...

the selespeed is probably the closest thing to a manual trans. but it still lags abit, dunno the technical term for it (think it's fly by wire or somethin). anyway, tested the 156 gen3 b4 and it is so far the only 'auto' that can really emulate, & i stress the word emulate the real manual. but whatever they are, selespeed, dsg etc, they are all electronics and be prepared for the unpredictable. the selespeed already has its own issues over the years.

in all auto boxes, for me the cvt is the worst. completely no feel at all. ppl not into 'driving' will hail it, as an auto suppose to smooth right. but strangely, the fiat punto cvt i tested recently using the 6 speed shifter is quite amazing. pretty smooth too but the 6 speed really allows yr engine to come to life, provided u use manual mode. that's the only cvt i may consider if cvt is only choice.

er... have to correct you here. The Selespeed IS a manual. The gearbox is a manual gearbox. manual gears, manual gear ratios, manual final drive, blah blah blah... It's just got actuators and an electonically controlled clutch (also manual) where you don't have to worry about controlling the clutch. I dunno about DSG, but the BMW SMG is also the same principle, and is manual.

No, it doesn't lag. You think it does because you're comparing it to an auto. The reason why it seems to lag is because of RPM matching. In actual fact, the gears are already shifter BEFORE you can even say "clutch". The RPM matching time varies. If you change it at the sweet spot of 6,300RPM, you'll find it changes FASTER than your own hand could ever do in a manual, even with a short shift. The reason why the Selespeed feels so choppy when changing gears is simply because it's manual. That's basically it.

The issues you mentioned about the Selespeed are not electronically related. They are pump and actuator related. These are moving mechanical parts. They failed initially, because of ill-prepared parameters within the initial batch spftware for the Selespeed ECU. But with the upgraded software from Gen3 onwards, these issues have been solved.

Even my log card registers the Selespeed as 5M. [drivingcar]

There's also Audi's and VW's DSG transmission [:)] . Their CVT, BTW, is very, very good [thumbsup] .

yes it is. but it still saps power. the reason why a 1.8T A4 with 163bhp cannot pull away fast from me is because of the CVT. and I have only 150bhp. The A4 also generates more torque than my car. Yet it can't shake me off... And it has turbo. I don't.

bloody CVT.

CVT response is not immediate definitely.... it optimised gear shifting , maximising mileage...

that's why you can pull away fast..

I have been trying to contact him but he's not answering his phone unsure.gifunsure.gifunsure.gif

How did the accident happen, looks like front passenger side was very badly damaged sweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gif

According to Rashid, he tried to show what the GTA can do, but made one crucial mistake. At a high speed corner, he was holding the accelerator, and he braked. He should have let go of one of them, but maybe he panicked. So, he slammed into the barrier. Luckily he was alone.

Note: This accident happened BEFORE they were in Sepang.
