  1. FORMER People's Action Party Hougang candidate Desmond Choo is leaving the labour movement for the private sector. Mr Choo, 35, is the National Trades Union Congress' (NTUC) deputy director of industrial relations and the National Transport Workers' Union's (NTWU) deputy executive secretary. He will leave NTUC at the end of this month. Yesterday, he told The Straits Times that resigning from the labour movement was not an easy decision and that he remains committed to workers' causes. "But I thought that after spending most of my working life in the civil service and some of it in NTUC, I should get more exposure in the private sector," said the former police scholarship holder who joined NTUC in 2010. He has found a job in the private sector but declined to give more details. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...sector-20130509
  2. Jurong MP Desmond Lee falls, fractures arm at bike event AsiaOne Wednesday, Jul 18, 2012 SINGAPORE - Desmond Lee, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jurong GRC Group Representation Constituency (GRC), has fractured his left arm after falling off a bicycle during the Bond & Bike overnight cycling event held on July 14 and 15. In a Shin Min Daily report published on July 17, Mr Lee was said to have been taking part in the awareness event organised by the People's Association Youth Movement and the Singapore Association for the Deaf. According to the paper, MP Desmond Lee had already begun cycling from East Coast Park and was in the vicinity of Kallang when the incident occurred. He told the paper that he had stopped to check his phone and was trailing about 20 metres behind the group of 150 cyclists. Mr Lee fell when he was making a turn and could not lift his bicycle when he got back up on his feet. The roller chain on his bicycle also broke in the fall. As he could no longer continue cycling, he decided to take a taxi back to East Coast, where his car was parked. There, he called his wife for help. Despite his wounds, Mr Lee did not think his injuries were serious, he told the Chinese daily. It was only when the pain did not subside the next morning that he realised something was amiss. A doctor told him that his left arm had been fractured, Shin Min reported. The MP also suffered from injuries and abrasions to his knee and arm.
  3. PM Lee: I'm disappointed that Desmond Choo did not win. Dear PM if you don't want to be further disappointed, pls get down from your ivory tower which these days seem to be more like a broken glass house. You might want to really listen to the ground and people more. Stop thinking you and your million dollar cabinet know what is right for Singapore and that your ways are the only true way. As a matter of fact, many of the government's solutions are knee jerk reactions and show no depth of thinking or understanding of the problems. Which is what pisses off the people as you keep telling us you have the best talent team and you pay yourselves all these millions and even more months of bonuses when even leaders of bigger countries with bigger population and social issues received so much less. You will also receive more admiration and trust if you stop using non partisan government agencies like LTA, HDB, PA and the mainstream media to help push your agenda. Treat the opposition MPs as elected representatives of the people who want an alternative voice to check the government as history and experience has shown that no man is infallable. These opposition MPs are also Singaporeans by birth right and they only want to do their part for the country. No need to treat them like public enemy number one. It takes a big person and an even bigger heart to set aside petty differences and work towards the better good for Singapore.

  5. The Straits Times www.straitstimes.com Published on Sep 25, 2011 If your wife is unable to cook, there's no point http://www.straitstimes.com/print/Breaking...ory_716512.html Aware to give out tongue-in-cheek award for sexism Tongue-in-cheek prize a fun way to raise awareness, says women's advocacy group By Jamie Ee Wen Wei It's not an award to crow about. But Hougang grassroots adviser Desmond Choo looks set to clinch what is believed to be the country's first sexism award, in 'honour' of a person or organisation that has done the greatest disservice to gender equality. The award is the tongue-in-cheek brainchild of the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware), which will dish it out on Oct 17 during its fundraising dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel to celebrate its 26th anniversary. The women's advocacy group will give three other awards to recognise those who have promoted gender equality causes. The sexism award, called the Alamak Award, has five nominees. Nominations were made by the public on Aware's website over a six-week period that started last month. Copyright
