Kindergarten teacher Iulia Anamaria Dobrin, 31, and her friend, businessman Cristian Bogdan, 35, are accused of receiving 99 boxes containing items such as cigars and perfumes. It is alleged that they had also received 35 packets and cartons of cigars and cigarettes. They were due to be in court on March 6, and their lawyer, Mr Peter Fernando, made an application for them to leave Singapore between Feb 27 and March 5. It was granted and the pair were released on court bail of $30,000 each. But they were still in Romania on March 5, citing medical reasons.

Marketing manager, Mr Maqbool Ahmed Khan, 32, had posted the money for Irfan Ahmed Khan Iqbal Ahmed Khan, 28, and even lent him his car to get married. But Irfan, who faces mainly drug-related charges, escaped in June before Malaysian authorities caught him in Johor about two weeks later. On Friday, district Judge John Ng not only ordered the forfeiture of S$85,000 of the total bail amount, he also chided Mr Maqbool for not ensuring Irfan did not abscond. Judge Ng pointed out that Mr Maqbool had loaned his car to Irfan without hesitation when his younger brother wanted to use it. Because of this, the judge added that instead of ensuring that Irfan's movements were within his supervision, Mr Maqbool had unwittingly given him the opportunity to abscond. Judge Ng also said Mr Maqbool had failed to "exercise due diligence in the discharge of his duties as a bailor". However, the judge took into account that Irfan was re-arrested within 17 days after he ran away, saying this was the only positive aspect of the case for Mr Maqbool's situation. But Judge Ng also noted that Mr Maqbool was not involved in his sibling's re-capture. The judge added that a larger sum would have been returned to Mr Maqbool had he contributed to his brother's re-capture. Mr Maqbool later told reporters outside the courtroom that he was satisfied with the outcome. Irfan is now back in remand and his case is still pending. His pre-trial conference will be held on Monday. - CNA/cc

  6. i had a discussion with a friend over lunch.. he got some 20k worth of unit trust in USD. recent retreating of the USD has got him thinking whether to bail out, or to stick on until the new US president is installed (likely no more Bush) my suggestion is to get out.. cos it can be years for it to revert back to 1USD=1.7SGD. or worse, 1USD=1SGD, then he will cry till no tears what do you think?
  7. 'Catch me if you can' scammer fails to turn up in court THE SCAMMER once taunted police with messages like 'Catch me if you can'. It was a theme 24-year-old Goh Chin Soo returned to on Monday when he failed to turn up in court to answer charges that he cheated motorists on an online motoring forum. Community Court judge Bala Reddy issued a warrant for his arrest. Goh, who was out on bail, was supposed to appear in court to answer the 26 charges against him. The self-employed man gained notoriety last year after cheating car enthusiasts of tens of thousands of dollars by offering to sell heavily discounted car parts via the Internet. He used an alias and later gloated to his victims that he would never be caught. He is believed to have covered his tracks by using Internet cafes. Police have not revealed how they identified him. Goh first appeared in court last November for allegedly cheating a man into parting with $280. All in, Goh faces 23 cheating charges, plus two under the Computer Misuse Act and one under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act. His aunt, Madam Han Juat Eng, who posted the $40,000 bail, said through an interpreter that her nephew was not home when she went there on Monday morning. The judge ordered Madam Han to show cause why the bail sum should not be forfeited on Sept 14.
