  1. Yes, your eyes isn't playing any trick, the "New" Niva is just a refresh of the original, which is 47 year old and still counting... another 18 year more and it will beat VW Beetle's record to be the most long life model. So what's new and make me started a thread about it? It now come with one of the most basic and standard safety features that has been around, for well, decades now: an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). However, it still doesn't come with any airbag, not even for the driver! Its engine has also been updated to make it Euro 5 compliant. That’s quite an upgrade given the outgoing model was built to the Euro 2 standard introduced in 1996, but it’s still far behind most modern engines. In fact, Euro 5 regulations have been around since 2009 whereas Euro 6 was introduced in 2014. If everything goes smoothly, Euro 7 laws could be enacted by 2025. See below for the rest of the updates for this almost half a century old SUV...
  2. Nissan has released a teaser image of the revived Datsun brand, showing the design cues of the front fascia. The image suggests that the first Datsuns will have a small honeycomb grille with a chrome frame. The headlights adopt an angular shape. According to Nissan, the Datsun models will have a strong independent brand identity. Late last year, a Nissan executive in Europe said that the Datsun models will share a platform with the Lada Kalina, a supermini produced by the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ and sold under the Lada brand. Lada will join the Renault-Nissan alliance with the vehicles sharing mechanical components. However, Nissan assured that Datsuns will have different exterior and interior styling. Along with the release of the teaser image, Nissan has announced that Datsun cars will be offered in South Africa, in addition to the previously planned markets of Russia, Indonesia and India. Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in March 1986. The Datsun name is most famous for the 510 (below), Fairlady roadsters and later the Fairlady (240Z) coupes.
  3. Lada comes back from the future with Xray concept which is probably the best design Russia has ever produced besides the Marussia supercars. Is a new auto industry emerging from a country which has an expanding car market? Russian auto giant AvtoVAZ debuted the Lada Xray concept crossover at the 2012 Moscow Auto Show. The concept's name is derived from the X-shape on its face, which looks like the Spindle grille of Lexus. For some reason AvtoVAZ is not putting the Xray up for production though the new look might be the new family face for future production vehicles by 2015. The Xray concept was designed by Steve Mattin, AvtoVAZ's new design chief who penned the 1997 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and current Volvo XC60. The British-born Mattin was also the former vice president and design director of Volvo Cars. "It's got a fairly long heritage and is a key player in the Russian market, it's an interesting time." Mattin said in an interview. Picture credit: Autoblog Exterior Interior

[extract] It has been some donkey years since I last read about Russian carmaker, Lada. The last time I saw a Lada was in the early 1990s

  7. "After several weeks of hushed whispers in closed circles, and originally considered something of an unlikely rumour, it has been revealed that Russian car manufacturer Lada are set to enter the World Touring Car Championship at some point in 2006 with the intention of a full assault in 2007 and 2008."
