  8. BMW officially unveiled the Vision Future Luxury Concept at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, giving the world's media an in-the-flesh look at not only a future design theme for the brand, but a rumored flagship model. This is a looker in person, thanks to its Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe-inspired design, and it's not too difficult to imagine it in production car form, with smaller wheels, larger mirrors and the other minor transformations that take place from drawing board, to auto show and, finally, to assembly line. In general, it seems like there are more than a few parts of this vehicle that are ready for production. This particular concept is wearing an eDrive badge on its backside, indicating that under the Vision Future Luxury's long hood is some form of plug-in-hybrid propulsion. It's anyone's guess as to what engine, battery and motor combinations BMW is playing with, although it does seem questionable whether BMW would launch a PHEV flagship to do battle with a top-rung variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (which will likely use V12 power). The BMW Vision Future Luxury furnishes a long-term outlook on the perception of modern luxury for the BMW brand. It stands for a forward-looking fusion of exclusivity and innovation, for a driving experience that is at once emotional and exclusive. All this is conveyed through the outstanding exterior and interior design of the BMW Vision Future Luxury along with its innovative technology, a pioneering lightweight engineering concept and a seamlessly integrated user interface and driving experience that caters optimally to the needs of all occupants. The BMW Vision Future Luxury makes its world debut at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. "Innovative technology and modern luxury have always been an important part of BMW's brand DNA," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "We use visionary concept vehicles like the BMW Vision Future Luxury to show where we may be going with these themes in the future, and to give us new inspiration and motivation. The BMW Vision Future Luxury – with its innovative technologies and with meticulous precision and quality in every detail – takes our thinking on modern luxury a logical stage further."
  9. Bentley is envisioning a powerful and even more efficient future with the Bentley Hybrid Concept – a technology showcase that previews Bentley’s first plug-in hybrid model, set to be a dedicated version of the all-new SUV available in 2017. The Bentley Hybrid Concept will be on display at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition on Sunday 20th April. As the first luxury brand to present a plug-in hybrid, Bentley leads the way in bringing new powertrain choice to the luxury automotive sector. Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, comments: “There is no doubt that plug-in hybrid technology is true to Bentley’s values of outstanding luxury and effortless performance. Combining our renowned engines with electric power reinforces and enhances both principles, and so we will gradually introduce this powertrain across our model range. By the end of the decade, at least 90% of our production will be available as a plug-in hybrid. We are proud to be pioneering these developments in the luxury sector.” The Bentley Plug-in Hybrid System Through Bentley’s hybrid system, customers will have a wider choice of modern, powerful and efficient powertrains. The plug-in hybrid system will offer a power increase of up to 25% together with a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions, both without any compromise to the exquisite luxury, timeless design and industry-leading refinement for which Bentley has become renowned. Bentley hybrids will also be capable of driving at least 50 km on electric power alone, allowing for emissions-free city driving with the option of enhanced performance on the open road. The Bentley Hybrid Concept The Bentley Hybrid Concept is based on the flagship model in the Bentley family, the Mulsanne, to show that hybrid technology enhances even the pinnacle of luxury and performance. Copper is used as an exterior and interior styling element to highlight the car’s electrical veins, including copper details to the headlamps, radiator shell bezel, brake calipers, feature line details and badges. Copper accents continue in the cabin, with inserts to the hand-crafted veneers fascias, switch bezels and instruments. Copper cross‑stitching to the Mulliner Driving Specification diamond-quilted interior provides the finishing flourish.
  10. KWID CONCEPT, a concept car unveiled at the Delhi Auto Show, highlights both Renault’s commitment to new markets, such as India, as well as the company’s ability to produce appealing products in the compact car segment. The vehicle’s robust, yet fun design, along with its technology-driven features, is targeted at meeting the needs of young customers in these markets. Beyond the playful and imaginative styling of the KWID CONCEPT, the concept car also comes equipped with a host of technology-driven features, led by its Flying Companion. Aimed at offering a safe and fun driving experience, the Flying Companion is the first of its kind in the automotive world. Taking off from the rotating rear portion of the KWID CONCEPT’s roof, the Flying Companion can be operated in one of two modes – the automatic mode using a pre-programmed flying sequence and GPS location, as well as the manual mode, which enables the companion to be controlled using a tablet inside the vehicle. The Flying Companion can be used for a variety of purposes, including scouting traffic, taking landscape pictures and detecting obstacles on the road ahead. The KWID CONCEPT is also Z.E ready - being pre-disposed to receive batteries for electric use - and comes with a charging plug behind the Renault logo. The KWID CONCEPT is powered by the latest-generation downsized 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission to combine driving enjoyment with low fuel consumption. Other technology-rich features include an electric operated front bench seat on a centre rail, electric opening doors, LED lighting and a state-of-the-art gear selector located on the dashboard next to the steering wheel. The vertically-mounted TFT touchscreen display acts as the dashboard in the KWID CONCEPT and also provides access to connected services.
  11. Kia has shown its first rear-wheel drive sports car at the Detroit motor show. The GT4 Stinger was shown to the press as the brand’s potential rival for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ. The GT4 Stinger is a 2+2, front-engined coupe powered by a 311bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine taken from Kia’s Optima racecars. That makes it substantially more powerful than the Toyota, with its 197bhp, but like the 86, the Kia is focused on being a proper driver’s car. Hence, the 4.26-metre long coupe has been designed to weigh a mere 1315kg in production form, runs double wishbone suspension front and rear and doesn’t even have a radio. ‘The soundtrack comes from the engine and out of the exhaust,’ says the concept’s head designer. ‘Our whole approach has been to do something very simple and pure, but new looking,’ Kearns says. ‘It’s a very simple shape, so that was our thinking’. While strictly a concept, Kearns says that if it makes production, the GT4 will be cheaper than the GT-86, which starts at £25k. The GT4 would run a modified version of the Genesis platform, he suggests. ‘We’ve got to make it lighter and smaller to capture the essence of this concept, but I think it’s do-able,’ Kearns says. Most of the car is production viable, apart from the stacked LED headlights, which are too low for most country's regulations, while the viability of the see-through A-pillars hasn’t been evaluated either. Yet it’s not a pipedream or crazy concept. ‘We always imagine it [a concept] on the street,’ says Kia president, Peter Schreyer, ‘and that’s the same with this car’. The Detroit reveal was the first time Kia’s board has seen the car, according to Schreyer. ‘We have not done any feasibility on it, but my gut feeling is there’s nothing about it that’s not possible.’ It’s expected that the GT4 Stinger will be in showrooms in 2016 if it’s given the green light for production.
  12. Lexus claims the new Lexus RC F is styled to support the most powerful V8 performance car ever developed by Lexus. While I cannot comment on the credibility of the statement, as no performance figures were revealed, I have to say the coupe is an exceptionally striking vehicle. The spindle grille might not be for everybody, but I believe the RC F wears it best. And not to forget, it has an well sculpted rump too. Also, personally this is Lexus' best work since the LFA and the new GS Sedan. Perhaps its the sharp styling or the colour, but the rear end reminds me of a 'Cybertron' look. It would make a good Decepticon, in my opinion. Although it is based on its 'tamer' RC Coupe sibling, the RC F has wider wheels and tyres, an active rear wing, air scoops, cooling ducts and carbon fibre components. The Lexus spindle grille, now a hallmark trait for Lexus' models, features a more subtle 'F' pattern on the lower half, while not failing to dominate the front fascia of the RC F. The hood is higher than on the RC coupe to accommodate the larger V8 engine and create a powerful flared profile. Three variations of 10-spoke, 19-inch, forged aluminum wheels are available, including a hand polished design. It might be a performance coupe, but apparently Lexus' obsession to detail isn't overlooked! Like the LFA supercar, the RC F features an available speed sensitive active rear spoiler which deploys at around 80km/h and retracts when speeds hit less than 40km/h. The interior complements the aggressive exterior, as the instrument panel is dominated by a central meter, which changes according to the four selectable driving modes. The information, colour and text size of the display can also be altered. With the RC F, Lexus will debut an, elliptical cross-section thick grip, steering wheel with optimum placement of paddle gear shifts. I have genuinely no idea what that means but I don't really like the chunky and thick wheel. That is probably the only complaint I have with this car, the steering wheel and the location of the star/stop ignition button, which looks a little high and far from the driver doesn't it?

  14. Mitsubishi Motors has revealed the first official photo and initial details of the brand new Attrage compact sedan. The car is the production version of the G4 concept which was displayed at the 2013 Bangkok Motor Show. Mitsubishi said the name 'Attrage' is derived from the word 'attractive'. Mitsubishi claims that the Attrage will deliver 'driving pleasure thanks to agility and pleasing driving dynamics'. Powering the Attrage is a 1.2-litre 3A92 three-cylinder MIVEC unit which churns out 76bhp at 6,000rpm and 100Nm at 4,000rpm. The engine is mated to a choice of CVT or five-speed manual transmission as standard. Based on the Mirage hatchback, the compact sedan measures only 4,095mm, which is about 300mm shorter than its close rival, the Toyota Vios. There are no interior photos of the new sedan at the moment but Mitsubishi says that the car offers generous rear seat legroom. The new model will be launched in Thailand come July 2013.
  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm90__azVSo Mercedes has revealed the 2014 S 63 AMG ahead of its public debut in September's Frankfurt Motor Show. The high performance Mercedes flagship sedan is powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged 5.5-litres V8 engine which delivers 585 bhp and 900Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission with three selections, namely "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual). Both the SWB and LWB S 63 AMG take only 4.4 seconds to reach 100km/h from standstill. The AWD 4MATIC model even manages to shave off 0.4 seconds from the century sprint performance. All models have an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The new S 63 AMG is up to 100kg lighter than its predecessor due to several weight saving measures. These include the usage of light alloy rims, aluminum construction for the roof and front panels, usage of carbon fibre for the spare wheel recess, among others. The lithium-ion battery itself already contributed to 20kg of weight savings. The S 63 AMG is equipped with Mercedes' AIRMATIC suspension which offers continuous damping adjustment. This enables the performance sedan to adjust better to driving styles and road conditions. The suspension offers two settings, namely "Comfort" and "Sport". A torque vectoring system helps to improve handling. High performance AMG ceramic composite brake, which weighs 20 percent lighter than stock ones, is on the option list.
  16. If you live in China (or plan to go there in the near future) and you have extra amount of money to spend, you may want to consider buying yourself a luxury coupe from German automaker BMW. Introduced for the first time back at this year's Detroit Motor Show, BMW is planning to start selling the M6 Gran Coupe in a wide range of countries, including China where the model has already made its debut. Let me remind you, to me, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is nothing less than a very luxurious four-door coupe that will not hesitate to take you to the century sprint in only 4.2 seconds. Under its hood, the coupe packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo engine which has the capability of delivering the power of no less than 560 horses in addition to 680Nm of torque in total. In order to sell the model in the origin country of pandas, the German automaker has teamed up with Brilliance, a local company, and they both have planned big things for the said coupe. Well, last but not least, as far as the price tag is concerned, BMW is demanding 2,390,000 yuan (around S$493,000) in exchange for a M6 Gran Coupe. Well, are you interested?

  19. Opel has released a video that provides a glimpse of the Monza concept. The presenter in the video is none other than Opel's new CEO, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. The Monza concept shall dictate the brand's new design language and represent a vision for the company’s future. In the video, Dr. Neumann takes us for a short tour at the Opel heritage workshop. He drives an old Monza coupe out of the workshop and towards the GM Design centre. At the centre, Dr Neumann unveils the Monza concept as though the old Monza was given an extreme makeover. The original Opel Monza was produced between 1983 to 1987 with a 2.5-litre six-cylinder power plant. It was also sold as a Chevrolet. The Monza concept will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

  21. The annual CATS Classified Car-nival took place at the Singapore Expo on 7th July. The event showcased both new and pre-owned cars, car-related accessories and other services. In addition, there was a Race Queen Pageant, games and what's a carnival without free goodies! While I was at the event, happily snapping away photos, I indulged in a packet of Oregon Fresh potato chips and a can of Orchard Fresh Grape Float that were distributed freely. Below are snippets of the models - both four-wheeled and two-legged - that were on display.

  23. Back in the late 50s and early 60's, a Bluebird K7, essentially a turbo jet engined hydroplane was used by Britain's Donald Campbell, to set seven world water speed records. The hull was built by Samlesbury Engineering - now merged into BAE systems with the engine built by Metropolitan-Vickers. Now, they are back and will officially launch a Sports Car dubbed DC50 and the Bluebird GTL Formula E race car at the upcoming Sustainable MotoExpo on Saturday 28th September at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, U.K. At the Expo, Don Wales, nephew of Donald Campbell will launch the Bluebird DC50 electric sports car. They are limited to just 50 units to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Donald Campbell's land and water speed records in 2014. With peak power of up to 360bhp and acceleration to match a Porsche, the Bluebird DC50 is a two-door coupe with electrically operated 'scissor' doors. It has a range of up to 321km, depending on specification, and will be available in only one body colour
