The info here is much more updated than the nea index

East side quite clear now

Go out get some fresh food and groceries before the haze returns [laugh]

If tonight no haze, can celebrate in advance, who knows when the haze will return and spoil the celebrations

Agreed hor. But don't think US would help, cause they are not affected by the haze.

Received this, not sure if effective

Remedies to ease the discomfort brought on by the haze and air polluton:

Step 1: in the morning, brew some chrysanthemum with a small slice of ginger and rock sugar for 15 minutes. Function : clear the heatiness and the irritation to the lungs.

Step 2: in the afternoon, boil barley water (use Chinese barley, those with black lines) with 2 slices of ginger, rock sugar for 40 minutes or more. Function: nourish the spleen, clear the heatiness, it's diuretic and is able to discharge harmful substances through the urine. Remember to put 1/2 slices of ginger, as chrysanthemums and barley have cooling properties, so ginger is added to protect the spleen and stomach's 'yang' (heat).

Another remedy is, boil green beans with slices of ginger and brown sugar.

So many palm oil products. If not, they won't be burning down forests at such scales in the recent decades. I think the first step starting from ownself, is try not to be wasteful and over indulging in the convenience of such products. More effectively, I think UN need to set certain curbs on excess use of any single resource -- getting all countries to comply will be the real challenge, as much as getting the major industrial countries (incl. US) to sign carbon reduction agreement. It's all about $$$$.

environmental-palm-oil-products-02.jpg

Yes direct ban is difficult.

A more sustainable approach is these importing countries. Not the palm oil producers raising price themselves. It like opium producers make one addicted then raise price to enrich themselves.

It will be more economically viable by levying carbon tax.

All imported products from Indonesia that contain palm oil or it's derivative product should be slapped with high carbon tax making them more expensive so consumers will shun away, effectively reduce the demand.
The carbon tax collected can be used to fund N95 masks given out annually to old & needy and treatment of pulmonary diseases caused by the haze + funds required to fight the haze.
WTO should encourage all countries to enforce carbon tax to all such Indonesia produce.
Probably then their government, business sectors and people will make concerted effort to wean off such lousy practice.
But are we as consumers ready to see more expensive products? Particularly it's going to be levied by own government.

There is some carbon taxing in Australia i think which the govt is reversing, cos it's unpopular.

Yes it was repealed last year

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_pricing_in_Australia

In fact Singapore already has carbon based tax, which is the CEVs, which has a set benchmark, higher pay more, lower pay less. Thus encourage manufacturers to produce vehicles that has less carbon footprint.

Similarly, it can be applied to food and other produces.

Singapore and Malaysia are small markets compared with the major consumer markets in US and Europe - the big spenders. Based on historical lessons, we know they won't really do anything unless the fire is in their own backyard. I mean, many of them are moving their polluting industries to Asia for a reason. They are also fighting their own inflation which impacts their elections.

I mentioned in the other VW thread that the US market is hypocrite - this is one big factor. And we are all guilty in one way or the other. Going green is not just using electric cars, recycling paper bags ... it's also about not being wasteful - the old school thoughts are still very relevant. Buy what you need, and not consume more just because its cheap.

Indeed, because USA is also the biggest culprit in carbon emissions, that's why they didn't support the Kyoto protocol decades ago.

Now China has become the largest emitter.

The carbon tax will make consumer spend their money with more environmental consideration
