I saw these at PS's Sembawang Music Centre and was wondering if the Chinese worded cover has anything to do with Chinese production or not.

Happened to see my colleague gotten 2 Focal CDs from Sembawang Music Centre, cost about $40+ each. Nothing abnormal but it seems to be marketed by Universal, this is something I have not seen before. Regardless, it is pretty difficult to find the first few batches of the Focal CDs. No fear, there are a few more good CDs which I will be reviewing on in this very same thread. Do watch out for it. wink.gif

I have also gotten help/info from X-Audio and NDV to bring in more stock so that you good people can each own these very good CDs...one is from in HK and the other is Taiwan.

OK, the long awaited review for you good folks. I have been into Blues these few days. On my recent trip to New Disc Village, I stumbled upon this superbly done Taiwanese blues/jazz CD titled "Taipei Blues" which was earlier made reference to by magazine reviews. I didn't even bother to test in the shop as I have this intuition it will be a good one. This CD didn't disappoint me at all. I warmed up my Harmonix EL 34 tubes and Marantz CD player for a good 5 mins before settling down to enjoy this 8-track CD on my single seater sofa chair in a cool 25 degree celcius room.

The sound stage is immediately defined and I must say that this recording, recorded live in a studio, which in my opinion, is potentially on par with that of Jazz at the Pawnshop, less the claps from the audience. I personally like the intimacy this recording delivers at home. The electric guitar playing the blue notes in front of the percussion of the left stage and the saxaphone, sometimes piano interweaving by the side of the double bass (interchanged between electric bass and double bass) on the right stage. The rolling on the electric guitar is sweet, the hitting on the cymbals and high hats, the brushing on the snare drums keeps my toes tapping. The saxaphone dominates a position in the sound stage but blends in very well with the rest of the instruments.

I have also listened to this CD in a car audio environment (3-way active highly powered system on D2 Clarion platform). What I would like to recommend when enjoying this CD in your car, is to listen the space each instrument occupies in your car acoustic. The instruments in this CD are a good gauge of the depth and width in your ICE system, this is probably one of the most demanding to be achieved in the car so far. You would want the percussion to be authorative, energetic while the double bass is demure but clearly defined, you will want the electric guitar (which is the main lead) to be rolling good notes as well...get this CD and you will understand where I am coming from.

Taipei Blues, produced in Sept 2006 by Idea House Band and distributed by Warner Music has familiar tracks improvised into fun blue tunes. I particularly like the first track which has a good introduction and sets the mood for the rest of the tracks to come.

Track 5, 6 and 7 are really great.

I have an extra used copy of Cai Qin's Golden Voice Vol II (original and produced by Dian Jiang in 2001) which has been extensively used to evaluate or tune car audio. PM me should you like to own this CD, but be fast. CD is still in good condition. wink.gif
