Though the Alfa 159 is a beaut, I'd hold back a bit until I am more sure about the 'new' General Motors (GM) engine block they have used to replace the original Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engine that has been around for ~2 decades. There was some kind of tie-up between Alfa and GM for the 159 ... can't recall the details.

Its still TS though ... just not Alfa's.

When I first read about the GM-derived engine in Euro mags last year, I must say I was a little disappointed. A visit to the Alfa showroom here confirmed it, and the sales person had then advised me to either get the remaining few 156JTS (the last 15x model with the 2L Alfa TS block), or scale down to the 146, which will still be retaining the original Alfa TS (1.6L) engine, albeit detuned to 105 BHP ... at least for now.

Otherwise, I'd have to go to the 166 V6, if I still pine for an Alfa original.

So much for GM ba5tardization of brand names and engines.

As for the cars listed in your voting list, I'd drop all TC'd versions and stick to NA ... nothing beats the latter in the long run, literally.

My choice would be the Honda EuroR with its screaming i-VTEC at 220(?) bhp. But what sells it even more (IMO) are the F/R double wishbone suspensions ... indeed a rarity nowadays (even half-disappearing from Lexus' new range) and the LSD. It is the LSD that made the difference between the Ford Focus Mk I and the current Mk II. The handling of the newer Focus does not quite reach the iconic handling prowess of the original Focus. Geometry, load distribution and suspension tuning aside, Ford took away the LSD because of cost reasons (stated so in the model launch reviews). It's just too bad.

I thought we were comparing performance cars here ... right? The 159, EuroR, LGT, 9-3 and all ..., so by including the Focus RS, did not think I needed to elaborate.

How to compare the Focus 1.6? [laugh]

Of course I was referring to the Ford Focus RS (Mk I), vs the new Focus ST (Mk II). Ford does not and will not produce the RS version anymore ... its just too expensive. They have said so.
