Oil Prices Rise, Led Higher by Gasoline

Oil Prices Rise, Led Higher by Gasoline; Weather Keeps Downward Pressure on Heating Oil

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Oil prices rose above $63 a barrel Tuesday, led higher by gasoline and on a recent decision by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to cut output early next year.

Prices fell sharply on Monday on expectations that warm winter weather would depress demand for home-heating fuels such as natural gas and heating oil.

"Right now we've found pefect equilibrium in crude oil," said Liberty Trading president James Cordier. "At $63 to $64, it's a sale, and at $58 to $59, people are not going to push it below there because they believe OPEC is serious about reducing barrels."

Light sweet crude for January delivery rose 94 cents to settle at $63.15 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Traders chalked up oil's rise to buying in gasoline futures, which climbed 3.83 cents to settle at $1.7005 a gallon on expectations that a U.S. government report scheduled for Wednesday will show motor fuel inventories shrank last week.

February Brent at London's ICE Futures exchange rose 68 cents to settle at $62.70 a barrel.

Nymex natural gas prices gained 0.8 cent to settle at $7.083 per 1,000 cubic feet, while heating oil futures slipped less than a penny to $1.7187 a gallon.

Monday's across-the-board price drop was led by heating oil and natural gas, which fell after the U.S. National Weather Service predicted above-normal temperatures for most of the country, the world's biggest energy user, for the rest of December.

Crude oil prices rose $1.41 a barrel last week, mostly because OPEC agreed to cut production by 500,000 barrels a day starting in February. In October, the cartel said it would remove 1.2 million barrels a day of production from the market.

While traders were initially skeptical of OPEC's ability to get members to comply with the October cut, a drop in production from most of the cartel's 11 members has given more weight to the last decision.

"There are definitely fewer barrels," Cordier said.

Crude had less of a fall than heating oil Monday, continuing to trade between $60 and $64 a barrel, a range it has been stuck in since the end of November.

What's the point of reducing prices by 6 cents than increasing it by 8 cents a few weeks later. Honestly, I give up trying to keep up with them. bearlina (Today, 10:16) huh, strange, usually other petrol brand follow the price increase/decrease. and the change is fast. almost a day no increase. time to boycoot exxonmobil till they reduce back their price back! ykjuay (Today, 10:07) only Esso/Mobil up their price 8cts ,so go for other stations bearlina (Today, 09:47) any idea if other petrol station increase their price ? ykjuay (Today, 09:41) Only Esso/Mobil increases its pump price, so dun support them, go for other pump station, they will drop back if nobody goes there, a stupid n greedy idea to suck on drivers giggss (Today, 00:09) feel like topping up now.. dunno shell up their price already anot ykjuay (Yesterday, 17:34) when crude oil up,pump stations increase price very fast, when oil price falls, they act blurr, muz always wait until the public cries ,then they reduce pump price....what's tis ant0800 (Yesterday, 16:23) I better top up this evening before Shell makes adjustments.

Hmmmm... strange.... Maybe they printed too many coupons, so not choice have to increase price to recoup the losses. [laugh]

hahahahahah [laugh][laugh] maybe.... I actually took one whole stack from the newly refurbished Esso at Upper Changi Road two weeks ago. Seems like these coupons work anywhere. Pumped $40 today and paid about $30.60 for Syn 8000, still ok considering its about 22.47 litres with 16% discount and $3 coupon

dont forget

next cpf restoration is coming

so employers got to stock up the money mah

The increase in CPF seems like a compensating measure to the hordes of angry Sgreans who are dead upset about the 2% GST rise [sly]

and just few months back

they said restoring of cpf back is impossible [sly]
