the 7 seater SUV market in singapore seems limited...i guess with the petrol prices going so high, it will be expensive to maintain SUVs and MPVs.

sometimes i wonder if it is cheaper to have 2 small reliable cars instead...like a perodua(daihatsu with toyota engine at proton price).

what do you guys think?

Ideally it should be something that's available or coming to Singapore...

Guess high fuel consumption and usually higher cc is the main deterent.

The fun factor of a SUV with the seating capacity of an MPV(note:not space) is something perhaps a certain group of young families look for?

can any bros from here advise why most nowadays suvs are FWD but not AWD [hur]

answer is simple...

like many (including myself), i want a suv-looking suv. but i dont need the offroading capablilities.

so if i can get the FWD option that is cheaper, i will certainly go for it.

understand now?

Many people buy SUV just because of the looks and the taller ride height. FWD saves petrol and build cost compared to AWD. Lesser components to go wrong as well. There's no snow and paved roads are everywhere, therefore FWD is good enough for most people. So that's why you see lots of FWD SUV.

Becoz full time AWD or 4WD will burn out all 4 of your tires on tarmac(that's when you are driving on normal roads and not doing off roading). I was warned when I did my crosscountry orientation back in NS. I had never experienced it happening.

It's always bias with most power transmitted either on the rear wheels or front wheels. Eg. 70% power going to the rear and 30% front. Most AWD system will only transmit more power/torque to the one or more wheels when it's detected "slipping" or no traction.

Not all AWD or 4WD are made equal. Some are made believe while some are more hardcore. You just got to see what kinda system it's used.

Supersonic

To cut a long story short:

AWD - 'always on' and power is auto transfer to/out of the wheels wif the most grip/least grip. More for SUVs for light off road work or simply better grip on road. Think Audi Quattro or Subaru Asymmetrical Drive.

4WD - Diff lock selectable n used for more slippery, off-road stuff. Think Land Rover or Jeep.
