While looking around for a pocket PC in Harvey Norman, I came across ASUS Eee PC which looks something like a cheap/small laptop.

It costs as low as a pocket PC (price is less than $600).

Has anyone used it here?

How is your experience with this unit?

the screen colour is horrible. Also, only running linux, so if you need XP, you will have to find ways to install that.

My boss has one with XP and he complains it is so slow.

I rather you guiys take a look at Kohjinsha UMPC. Pay a bit more, but way better.

OK guys and gals - time to get into the UMPC craze now (reading MCF on my Dopod 810 gives me a headache [:(] ).

Now that the 2nd generation EeePC is out, which of these to get?

1. EeePC 900 $768 (1 Gig RAM 20 Gig Solid State Storage)

2. HP 2133 $999 (2 Gig RAM 160 Gig HDD)

For me definately the HP one.

1GB RAM is barely enough for WinXP lor. this kind of PC to me is "fun" PC... imagine having to wait for things to load and suffer from slow performance while doing fun things... kills all the joy.

I'm also looking into getting one... Get the HP 2133, wait for the Windows XP Version cos the Vista version is damn slow... Click on this and you will see why :)

Cheers

I tried the EeePC display set at CarrerFour.

There were only a few programs in it and yet it took a long time to load and open the documents in Open Office. I was rather disappointed with the speed.

By topping up about $300, I could get a low-end notebook.

Shouldn't be, unless the document is large.

For the sub 600 price, the expectations should not be sky high.

Furthermore, the sony vaios TZ series, which is the only proper PC notebook in the UMPC range, is 300grams heavier, bigger, and 3k more.

It has lots of mods too, from expanded storage to built in GPS hack to touchscreens.

Haha it loads fast because it is LINUX + flash memory usage! [:p] I've been using dual boot Linux-Windows on my PC and I must say Linux is still smooth n fast while my Windows has started to deteriorate. I would advise against using Windows on the EEE. The system does slow down significantly.

The HP 2133 looks very good, but its via processor though running at 1.6Ghz, seems to be even slower than the 900Mhz celeron the eee is using.

Even worse is the via graphics processor. It is very slow, even for the most entry level laptop.

I just compared the 2 models at funan, the hp 2133 is slightly wider- but all sold out! Only 1 beat-up display set at harvey norman. I am still undecided, but prefer something smaller (for storage can use main laptop).

Had it for closed to 2 months already, bought it at $598, the 4GB version. I would say quite good, performed exactly as I thought it would, primarily used it for email, surf web and some other simple applications. With a few thumb drives holding various other files I need, found that increasingly no need to bring my Vaio around.
