Brake Fluid

City driving and couple with our high temp and humidity, most of the singapore cars brake fluid will have absorbed enough moisture to reduce the brake fluid boiling point to drop as much as 50%.

If yr mech have invested in a very simple brake fluid moisture tester he will have more brake business in hand than he can handle.

Thanks bro. Already got dot 4 brake fluid from my car made stockist.

Apparently, my car made manufacturer does not produce its own brake fluid. So I only take what the stockist in Singapore has.

So far changed already it is quite good. [nod][thumbsup]

if you see the drop of your brake fluid which mean your brake pad is going to ware out.

sometime we need to monitor the fluid level. and if you notice the drop it telling you that it time to replace the brake pad. just some word of advice for safety. cheers.

Noted and thanks for your advice.

If I'm changing from dot3 to dot4, how is the flush done in order not have the old dot3 in the system? Cause the other time when i replace and do a flush the mech suck the fluid from the reservoir (don't know the proper name [:p] ) till a little bit left, then he top it up with new dot3 fluid. He then worked from the rear left (RL) using vacuum bleeder, topping up the reservoir as the fluid level drop. And continue working his way to the RR, FL and lastly FR. I think he used about 1.5l of dot3 to flush the system. If using this method to switch from dot3 to dot4 will there still be dot3 fluid mixing with dot4. I know they are compatible but what about the diff boiling point?

The best method is to flush with yr preferred brake fluid until clear fluid flow out of the bleeding nipples. To do this th mech will need a auto refiller to help to do the work so that the master cylinder will not run dry and suck in air.

Turbocharged

Borrow this thread for brake discussion.

Recently when I brake, I could sometimes hear a soft "Krong" sound coming from the rear.

Does anyone here know what is the likely problem?

BTW, the rear brake pads and drums had only done about 10,000km as I changed them not too long ago. My vehicle managed to pass the VICOM inspection a few weeks ago. VICOM had a brake test and there was no problem.

bro. check the handbrake if it grips the drum at the back. I had the same issue. The AD workshop helped to fix my handbrake and problem resolved.

You might be right.

I have been parking on gentle slope these past few days. To prevent the car from sliding down, I have been pulling the hand brake higher than usual. I am not sure if my action has resulted on such repercussion on my brakes.

BTW, if I leave the problem unattended, will it give rise to more serious problems?

For my issue, it was the case of handbrake not able to release fully. So it gripped the drum at the back. So there was this noise when I drove.

I am not sure if yours is the same problem. If yes, you'd better get it fixed rather than to leave it unattended. May affect your rear braking.

Hi

would like to confirm with if dot 5.1 is the same as dot 3 & 4 cat. I understand from a frd dot 5 is a diff cat. Therefore 5.1 and 5 are same or different cat?

Lastly if 3, 4 and 5.1 are the same cat, is dot 5.1 better?

Thanks

Supercharged

dot 5 is different and shouldn't be mixed with 3/4/5.1.

5.1 better but if you don't do a lot of hard braking over a sustained period of time, eg. tracking,

then 4 is good enough...

Need to change brake fluid around once per year or 2 years to keep your braking system efficient and effective.

DOT 5.1 is higher grade ( Fully Synthetic ) juz like engine oil....so is up to u whether u prefer to use a slightly lower grade DOT 4 or even 3. If the price for DOT 5.1 is close to DOT 4 WHY use DOT 4 [laugh]
