Mcfguy 1st Gear June 1, 2008 Share June 1, 2008 went to do a 30000km servicing at BM Pandan 3 days ago and inform the Service Engineer that there was some rattling noise coming from the under carriage when I step on brake and release and also when moving off turning right. The noise is random only. Later that day, got a call that the rattling noise is due to both the left and right drive shaft worn out and recommended to change them. Price including labour is $2700! I told the SE to KIV. Has anyone face drive shaft problems before and does it really cost that much to replaced? My car is 4.5 years old and very low mileage as the driving distance for my trips are usually very short. ↡ Advertisement

Mcfguy 1st Gear June 1, 2008 Author Share June 1, 2008 I thought so too. Is it a common problem for drive shaft worn outs?
Vtim 3rd Gear June 2, 2008 Share June 2, 2008 (edited) normally the drive shaft do not worn out, it's the CV joint that worn out. It only happens if you always fully lock your steering when you do a turn, both left or right, this will cause the rubber boot to tear over time and then dirt and sand will get into the joints, after a while there will be noise when turning. I would suggest you replace it outside, there are a few drive shaft specialist that can replace them for you, normally the drive shaft will be retain as it can last a long time unless you are involve in an accident and they are bent. They will replace new CV joints for both end, one for the wheel end and another for the engine end. Edited June 2, 2008 by Vtim
Mcfguy 1st Gear June 2, 2008 Author Share June 2, 2008 Thanks for the info. I think I occassionally locked the steering but should not be very frequent cos have heard about locking steering wheel is no good for car, just didn't know what it's no good for. Now I know. So, I guess the price quoted by BM should most probably be replacing the whole shaft. Do you know the price of replacing CV joints or any good specialist to recommend? Hosaybo 6th Gear June 4, 2008 Share June 4, 2008 I myself experience this problem with my altis about 2 years back when my car is about 2+ years old. Quickly inform them and got it change within the warranty period. Seems to be a common problem for altis
Mcfguy 1st Gear June 4, 2008 Author Share June 4, 2008 from Vtim's explanation above, I guess if any of us drivers were to lock steering wheel when turning, chances will be higher for the CV joints to be worn out... I realise since his explanation that I lock steering quite a bit when reverse parking
Ncp91 1st Gear June 4, 2008 Share June 4, 2008 You can just do regular inspection of your CV joint boots by looking for a coat of dirt covering the CV boot. That indicates that there is a crack in the rubber. The grease would trickle out and attract dirt. If you catch it early, the CV joint won't be damaged. You just need to replace the boot. Vtim 3rd Gear June 4, 2008 Share June 4, 2008 Just to let you know my previous Alfa 33 16v, drive until scrap, no problem with CV joints on the drive shaft and also power steering. Power steering may fail earlier if you often lock the steering while turning, what I do is I often turn fully and then release back a bit during the turn. Amazon777 3rd Gear June 4, 2008 Share June 4, 2008 (edited) Encountered the same issue on my previous G9 Corolla, was quoted $2K+, but luckily happened within the 3 years warranty period. Mileage then was close to 50,000km. Since your car 4.5yrs old, may be it's telling you to consider a new car?
