Qpik Supercharged December 11, 2013 Share December 11, 2013 Thanks for informing the meaning of chartered. I always thought it meant can hire for a short time. Like charter a boat for a for a cruise. I learn so many new English words these days. I always thought a solicitor was a lawyer until a friend in vice told me he arrested women in GL for soliciting. As for vice, I was shocked when my father told me the meaning of vice. Then he asked where did I hear about the word. I told him my sports teacher made me vice captain of the football team and it was my job to arrange outings and activities and I was wondering what kind of activities and places I should arrange. Was reading yr post over lunch, my fren nearly had pumpkin rice on his face. Spidey10 Supercharged December 11, 2013 Share December 11, 2013 How many years of mid-night oil did you burnt? It was bad! Really really burnt oil until no more! Until I gave up dun want to study and just go and sit for the final exam! Unfortunately that didn't work as well. I cleared my first 3 levels in one go...but I can tell you the finals is no walk in the park!! from Q&A: CIMA focuses more on management reporting [strategic planning, forecasting etc] ACCA focuses more on auditing and tax [accounting rules and regulations]. Both qualifications are highly sought after [in the uk anyway] and can both lead to virtually the same destination. If you want to work in practice or focus more on auditing or tax ACA or ACCA is the path. For strategic work [management consultancy etc] CIMA is the path. Financial services varies, however being an accountant would allow you to work in M&A as it involves analysing financial statements. Typical roles include : accountant, analyst, controller, director [virtually any finance position in a company] with the exception of financial services. In my layman nutshell, "ACCA" is a historian, mostly digging and looking at the past while "CIMA" is a technocrat, mostly looking forward. You are very very right....I am now in controllership...managing the co p/l to ensure no surprises and the co hit the bud... Both acca and cima is able to lead u to this career path... Cheers everyone

Hotshot85 4th Gear December 12, 2013 Share December 12, 2013 Bros/Sis, Got a few qns regarding this ACCA thingy. Is it possible to enrol into an ACCA directly, or are there like, lower tier certs that you gotta attain before you are able to study for it? Are all kinds of diplomas eligible? I was studying biotech back then haha, but suffice to say, the working environment wasn't my cup of tea and I'm kinda stuck in limbo now with nowhere to go because all companies only wanna see certs instead of seeing how much experience you have and how good you are in your work. Thinking of a career change now, and was wondering what the steps would be like. A million thanks in advance!!

But, don't let this low entry requirement fool you. It's blardy dicfficult to study and to pull through (all UK chartered certifcations same same). You biotech, should be no problem for you. Count bacteria is same as count marnie. Concepts the same. In fact, people from Science and Tech background should generally fare OK.

Cuz the last time that I had to study for anything and sit for exams, was 10yrs ago haha. Jman888 Moderator December 12, 2013 Share December 12, 2013 honestly unless you are already working in the field or environment, taking accounting while working in other field is not a easy task to get a specialized degree. I see many accounts assistant or junior accounting staff taking ACCA like forever to complete, 3-5 years some even took 8-10 years and give up. If you are in engineering, IT, or other field that has zero link to accounting, audit, business admin, i would say you really need A LOT of discipline and determination.

Kangadrool Supersonic December 12, 2013 Share December 12, 2013 Another (softer) option is to take part-time degree in accounting, business (maj in accounting). They are generally easier to pass and will help you as a stepping stone to related field.

Well, I am currently just a nobody working in SGH. Tried my luck with private hospital but even they require a degree just to be an Exec. Sigh ... so bo pian, needa study again and hoping for a change of environment too haha. Jamesc Hypersonic December 17, 2013 Share December 17, 2013 Somethings like medicine, product safety and accountancy, I don't think we should take the softer option. Pass with 50% and balance the books only half the time. Every other month the financial figures will be correct!

Yes you are right some jobs just need a degree and any degree will do. I am getting old too and we old dogs are best at learning new tricks. I like watching adult educational videos and have no problem putting them into practice. Except the ones that require more flexibility. But what the hack, its the trying that counts right?

This is the course I'm considering actually: you seriously have to ask yourself what you want to do, a mid career switch is not easy, going into accounting from basic after 30 years old is even worst. I am not trying to scare you, the job is quite tough and the prospect can be quite limited if you stuck in a company with many senior around. Having said, job opportunity are plenty in accounting with many SMEs or start up. However, you have to work from ground and start climbing, you may end up as accountant after 2-3 years and maybe a manager role in a SME in 3-4 years (after graduate hor). After that its all up to how thick is your skin and how good and convincing you can tell the boss/client what 1 + 1 is.
