Sorry for late reply. Work gets in the way. Work = 4letter word :-O

 

Dun mind setting up the Ford Club, but typically 50% of my time is

travelling (internet access via hotel is slow & expensive! GPRS good but

not rolled out in many places) so as moderator I will end up being the

"critical item on the critical path". Not good......

 

5 years of being sysadmin/webmaster with powers of life and death

over (l)users was fun, but I'll have to pass this time. Thanks for the

thot.

If you're driving a Mazda-derivative then you can check out the

Mazda-related clubs too (there's one also on Delphi, can't remember the

url). Just go to delphi do a search for words like "ford singapore" or

"mazda singapore" or "ford laser singapore" or "mazda club singapore"

 

As Turbobrick suggests, you can also set it up, just need to round up

the members (announcements, word of mouth etc). He will be able

to help with the technicalities of the site. Just need to step up to bat.

 

I can help, but i travel a fair amount to places where internet access is

often problematic.

 

Mebbe we shd mv this to the Conti-talk forum. (Wonder if my Focus

uses Taiwanese wheels? See, obligatory in-context content :-) )

OZ Superleggera are light and expensive. Weight:price ratio proportionately not as good as the Taiwanese ones, but these are used more for racing. As you mentioned, the Taiwanese ones are good enuff if you dun intend to race.

 

Just wondering why would you get "sick of the Taiwanese type shortly"?

Is it the looks? or the weight? Curious minds want to know :-)

Being moderator of a club within MCF is pretty straight forward, just get the Ford guys to register and let you know and U add them to any private list or section U wanna setup, that's it!

 

Setting up take a while but after that it'll be running on it's own.

Hmm, description of moderator is different from wat I had in mind. In the old/ancient days, all posts had to be individually approved by the mod. Personally I prefer the light touch and have it free for all.......

 

Ok, let me think about it. Have plenty of time to think on flight to Taipei (really soon now) :-)

I'm a newbie here.

 

Can you tell me if all rims can fit on any car ? I noticed that most rims either have a 4 nut or 5 nut configuration. Should that be all I need to notice ?

 

Reason I ask is that I'm getting a new car soon, and I don't know if I should get the 15" rim upgrade or get a 2nd hand set from the classifieds.

 

Someone has already mentioned that the Dealer upgrades are JRD (Malaysian Made) and very poor quality.... Also not necessary looks so good.

But are they prone to damages like bending or surface pitting? I'm considering whether should I spend a little more on Euro brands but times are bad

yah...taiwan rims bent easier than those jap or euro rims...

but in singapore roads,i think its still acceptable...not many holes on the roads...

but if u r using low profile tyres,i think better get those good rims...

Some of the lightweight Jap rims are very $$$ too! I was quoted $770 per rim for 17" Jap branded ones, claims to be very light (forgot the brand).

 

My current set of ROH from Australia are much cheaper ($320 each for 17") but a tad heavy at 11kgs.

 

 

Mugen produces a limited set of rims which cost $1000/pc for a 15 incher....

we ahve one shop selling one set in singapore...

i think its hard to find 18-19 incher with 4 lugs...maybe there isn't this type...

its already very hard to find a 17 incher with 4lugs....

btw,what car r u driving???why put such a big rims...definitely it will be nice if u have those wide body kit...just my opinion...cheers...

Short answer, no.

Actually, there is much more than the 4 or 5 nut question. There is also the loose nut behind the wheel which needs more attention :-) Jokes aside, you need to check the PCD and offset.

PCD (pitch centre diameter) refers to the "circle" the bolt centres make. It must be exact. You can't put a 98mm PCD wheel on a 100mm PCD mount, unless you want to get adapters etc.

 

Then there is the question of offset. This measures the distance of the mounting surface to the wheel centre line. Too far out and it could cause rubbing, and worse still shortened life of suspension components (eg dampers) due to the "leveraged" mass. Imagine the same mass (loosely, the wheel + tyre combo, also referred as the unsprung mass) mounted furthur out, so whenever this mass goes over any surface irregularity, the up/down movement will be magnified, simply because of the lever effect.

 

If u are on a budget, and don't intend to to serious driving, the dealer upgrades are ok. My focus with the dealer (probably JRD) wheels, has been to pasir gudang and sepang, so far so good, but then I proabbly don't push it that hard.

 

for 2nd hand wheels, you have to examine them carefully. Know the difference between cast and forged, and if there is any damage/repair, you can make an informed judgement. Look carefully, there are good buys out there, you just have to look hard. Also, see if you can get some warranty on the wheels. Some defects/damage/wear & tear items don't show up until after use.

can I know what is the acceptable difference in terms of offset of rim? Also, I searched the market and noticed that it is very difficult to find rims of 4 x 114.3 pcd. Why is this so? I am currently looking for 16" or 17" rims with this pcd. Any recommendations on the brands that produce this pcd?
