Elfenstar 3rd Gear December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 Nice to have a stalker. Just kidding, I'm flattered that you bother to remember all the rubbish I post here. Anyway Good news is that they're planning to abolish road tax. Bad news is that they plan to extend the OPC like system to all cars here. They'll be combining it with an ERP system in which we're taxed further if we go to certain areas. Once this happens, no more red plates and no more normal cars. If they make the basic car ownership cost equivalent to what current OPC owners enjoy, then it's still not enough to let me realise my dream. They really should do more to lower basic car ownership cost (and consequently, tax more for usage). I was impressed that someone else read what I call LTA "roadmap". Knowing them, they're still going to keep car prices highish just to "keep the vehicle population down" ↡ Advertisement
Darryn Turbocharged December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 Wow man, if they did charge by km I would die man, 40k per year at 13c per km would be $5,000!! But can't complain too much, by km charge is very "fair" Just have to make sure 1. Mechanism in place so only sg km get charged (if paying for my trip to Ipoh would be double jalat) 2. During transition is fair to all 3. Those that do outdoor sales don't end up shortchanged
Raining Neutral Newbie December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 this system wont work here.. it may deter ppl from driving, resulting in big daddy earning less... ultimately if one study our system, it "encourages us to drive...else why the erp so "reasonable" ? seriously, if they really wanna stop jams plonk $10 every gantry, voila, no more jams. notice how opc and erp complements each other? peak hour all opc are unleashed + office hour jam + $1-2 erp = $$$ go figure

Not to mention you can use your credit card to buy the day coupons..... Wait till they start the use now pay at the end of the mth scheme....... Raining Neutral Newbie December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 This morning I drove to Orchard via CTE during ERP timings. The traffic was heavy but I was making good progress - 30 to 40 km/h most of the time without getting stuck much. I can only remember coming to a complete halt for about 2 seconds once, but otherwise still able to move. Even for KPE which I used everyday when going to work, when ERP is in operation the traffic was heavy, but still bearable. At least I can filter out to ECP (City) direction easily enough. It's normally time that is just before ERP start that's more congested because everybody want to beat the system. So frankly I can't say ERP doesn't work at all, and I also do not hate ERP that much. Now putting on flame proof suit.... (No... I'm not pro P@P either) Firing squad ready! but seriously to each its own haha, your experience may vary this erp system is dependent on our tolerance level... $0.50-$1.50 erp, we happily go through it... $1.50-2.50, we kpkb but still go thru it.... $2.50 - $4 ... traffic dramatically reduced but lesser income .... $10-20 ...wahahaha clear traffic jus ask ourselves 1 question... who release the coe quota for the cars to congest the road in the 1st place? only can grumble and hopefully more ppl make the right choice sans nxt year

Nhyone 4th Gear December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 It's normally time that is just before ERP start that's more congested because everybody want to beat the system. So frankly I can't say ERP doesn't work at all, and I also do not hate ERP that much. I don't get charged by the ERP very often, so I say I love it. I do think it helps to redistribute traffic. However, it doesn't always work well because while the CBD traffic is smooth, the roads around it still remain jammed and you still get stuck in traffic. So driving is fine, as long as you avoid the absolute peak hours and if accidents don't happen. Now, parking, that absolutely sucks. Can't find a lot anywhere. Throttle2 Supersonic December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 Mileage driven road tax Traffic jams are infuriating wherever you are, but in the Netherlands, they are the source of particular angst. Not only is the densely populated country home to Europe's most congested metropolitan region
Benarsenal Turbocharged December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 Not really, if they did it properly, genuine lovers of motoring should rejoice. Just imagine being able to immediately afford the exotic of your dreams and driving it every alternate weekend up North for a no-holds-barred trackday. Convoy with your MCF/SGTrackies/Tractionclub khakis for safety. Good times, man. But, no, they won't do it properly, in all likelihood. And car ownership (the basic cost of having a car sitting in your driveway 24/7) will still remain exorbitant, and this usage tax will only be an additional burden. This would be a lose-lose for all. That is provided we have the money to afford such exotics in the first place. There are people who simply enjoy taking the car out for a drive to nowhere (around the island also can) regardless of car or road.
Ladykillerz 4th Gear December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 Personally I think this plan is good for Singapore road. So called, "Pay as you drive" System. I reckon that this plan will definitely help to reduce vehicles on the road rather than the current ERP system....imo.~ Peak hours are jam packed like crazy and I do see commercial vehicles misuse during off working hour. Singapore is such a small country and I believe it is not hard to implement such new GPS system. But in the end of the day, SMRT might need to consider to increase the number of public transport. Lesser to near zero misuse of commercial vehicles and so on.~ However, good luck to those who are into sales and marketing sector.~ =P
Skylurker Clutched December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 i laffed at the article. I'd rather pay $10 to drive 250km than to save on it and ride 250km on bicycle. My ass gonna really get screwed up by the time i reach the 250km mark, wherever it is. Its gonnna hurt big time

Zyrofillica 1st Gear December 24, 2009 Share December 24, 2009 wat mileage tax? wat erp? so much hassle. Just up petrol tax by another 200% gao tim already. All those petrol guzzlers will switch to hybrids. All the solo drivers to work will carpool or consider motorcycle. Everyone can own a car. But will think twice of driving it, esp during peak hour where u will burn the most fuel stuck in those hideous jams. only those performance marques and luxury car companies will boycott us. lol oh and not to mention the oil companies. But mother earth will love us. Any idea if our govt is starting on a dyke project like holland? I think they should forsee rising sea levels wiping our tiny piece of nose 5hit island off the map. I think its about time they start making preparations to build the great merlion dyke.
1fast1 Supersonic December 25, 2009 Share December 25, 2009 (edited) As I said, there are people for whom commercial vehicles are their sole mode of transport. So the van becomes bao ka liao. Weekdays ferry goods, weekend ferry people. And that's abuse - cannot afford a commuter vehicle, take public transport with the family. After all, there are plenty of people who can't afford a car and don't qualify to own a commercial vehicle also, and they get along fine with public transport. Cheats like the ones you mentioned spoil it for everyone, they are responsible for increasing commuter vehicle ownership costs.
