I must admit that Audi cars are getting very popular in Singapore, notwithstanding their low OMV and high selling prices! A close friend bought a S5 last year for S$245k (when COE prices were still "within this planet"), but I almost freaked out when he revealed that the OMV for the S5 was like $64k ! We worked out the AD profit margin based on the established formula and realised that it was close to $80k ! No wonder the local Audi AD could splurge on full page adverts in the ST every Saturday and build new service centres!

 

The popularity of Audi cars have since made them very common on our roads so much so that if you drive an Audi, well...you're just one of the guys. Unlike in the past when Audis were less common, people would look when one passes by. But now, its swarming the roads like NTUC taxis! My friend (who wanted to be "different from the Jones" by buying the S5) is now kicking himself in the butt. And with PIs bringing in Audis too...well...you get the picture. His car is now in sgcarmart waiting for a new owner. Luckily for him, he got it rather cheap by today's standards and would lose little money if he manages to sell his car. And he's mighty confident that somewhere out there, there's a guy with a S5 written on his face who would come along and buy his car!

 

 

Actually, we can't comment like omv or financial stuff like tis. Nasty people will tell you, i got money to burn why you care.

 

You notice those lambo or ferrari with 2-5Km on them when sold?

 

Why? Because they got money to burn & i can afford it!

No offence taken Tinkerbellll..I was just also commenting how the popularity of a car (in this case Audi) could actually spoil the premium image it set out to create. Granted that MS (formerly from BMW) did a great job at marketing Audi cars following his tiff with the lady boss at TTS and departure from PML.

 

In fact, Audi is extremely popular in Germany (which it originated) and constantly outsells BMW & Merc because of its competitive pricing. Sadly thats not quite the car in Singapore where they are priced in Bimmer and Merc territory but the OMVs just can't match the corresponding segment. Audi, in my opinion, also hasn't reached teh status of Merc and Bimmers here. Its still more of an executive car...(shows that you're still climbing that corporate ladder).

 

Moreover, most Audis are front-wheel drive (save for the higher end versions which come with quattro ie. 4-wheel drive). This kind of set-up (i.e. front-engine, front wheel drive- F/F) was never meant to offer a luxury feel. Till now BMW and Merc had kept the front-engine, rear wheel drive format (accept for the A class). Lexus did the same for their cars, except for the ES 300 which was F/F layout. But the ES was merely just a glorified Toyota and never felt "Lexus" at all.

 

Audi, with its LED lightings, are very appealing to female drivers. The "sexy eye lids" especially on the A8 is very attractive, yet provides as a passive safety system to warn other motorists about its presence. This designed in fact revolutionarised a change in headlamp designs. You now see this daytime running lights (DRL) on Merc S Class, the new Jaguar XJ and even Porsche. Driver of lesser cars have even to gone to line LED lights on their headlamps in an attempt to make their car look "Audi." But most of them only managed to look like "floats on a 7th month temple festival!"

 

I am not surprised that Audi had won several acolades for its cars and design. I am certain that as the brand continues to grow, it would make their cars sportier by offering just rear-wheel drive versions. I'm on their mailing list and get literature on their vehicle development from time to time. The latest issue on the development of the headlamp for their A8 was, in my opinion, very enlighting (no pun intended) and class leading. My only wish is that Audi in Singapore would stop resorting to marketing tactics and gimmicks and give motoring what they truly deserve..which is a fair price for their cars. Maybe then would I consider buying a Audi TTS coupe or roadster for weekend fun.

Well I used to like Audi but now I think I prefer BMWs.... at least the BMW give me a straight 6 at the same price level of an entry level 2.0T. This is what u get from local Audi.... a pretentious luxury car.

well,

 

Audi's of today,

 

still look pretty darn similar to the 90's model,

 

save for a larger grille, and LED lights....

 

park the Audi 80 and A4, you could hardly tell the 80 is actually a more than 10yr old predecessor of the A4....

 

but i must say,

 

the A4 does have an executive interior feel....compared to the bland and ahpek looking 3-series and dated C-Class (both due for new models in the coming years),

 

i'd take the A4 anytime, even though it's dashboard and console are infested with buttons....

CCFL just looks so alluring and sexy....

I prefer the Audi LEDs.... but then again, the bimmer angel eyes are cool too.

 

BTW, how do you find the new E-class? I thought it looks Hyundai on first look and quite blend. The signature big small eyes looks dated as well. But it does ride very well.... but again 1.8 compressor for 220k is way overpriced.

 

I think Singapore is the only country where the luxury segment have puny engine priced with obscene margins. But people still buy.... hiaz.

 

THink better buy Japanese better..... RX350 or GS300, less worries and big power engine and comfort ride.

And not forgetting its the default choice of the premium taxi companies too! Buy a white-coloured Merc E200 (or E250 or whatever engine size in the E Class segment) and risk getting flagged down furiously on the road, especially on a rainy day...

Good bros, can you recommend a good maintenance and tuning shop that specializes in Audi? Just got a used A4 cab and it's got several years on it and beside Premium will only give an appointment soonest in a week's time. Don't mind paying a bit extra for good and reliable shop service. Thanks for your help!

I concur with your sentiment....a lot of these brands get killed when they come to Asia. Why? I really dunno...but to market Audi cars at such a premium is to me a crime. Of course there are people with a lot of $$ to burn, but those who can afford it will probably elect to burn their money elsewhere....Audi is very much a middle income brand....the premium canot be justified. I almost boght the Q5...the drive is fantastic, but they refused to budge on price or any other considerations so I walked a few doors down and bought myself another "well insulated/rebadged" Toyota.

 

I am a secure person and don't need a brand to define me. Lexus it is. All the creature comforts and a willing engine...yes some people argue there's no feel. But I LIKE! The price I pay the things I get for it...no brainer. And it can be driven hard! I'll attest to it. After having owned 2 ...I think I'm probably be a Lexus for life fan. But that's not the point I reckon. The car (Audi) is sound. The looks could be tad conservative but it's ok ..I don't mind it. Price is perhaps the biggest disparity here.
