Congrats to Schooling!! INCHEON: Swimmer Joseph Schooling won Singapore's first gold at the Asian Games in the 100m Butterfly finals in a Games record time of 51.76 seconds, edging out China's Li Zhu Hao who ended up with silver. This is Singapore's first men's swimming gold since 1982. The 19-year-old came in second at the turn behind Li, however the Chinese swimmer ran out of steam. Japan's Hirofumi Ikebata took bronze.

Chinese auto giant Wanxiang wins Fisker bid By Katie Fehrenbacher Summary: Chinese auto parts giant Wanxiang has won a bid for electric car maker Fisker for $149 million, and a judge has approved it. Will they restart production of the Karma and make the Atlantic soon? A Delaware judge approved the sale of bankrupt electric car maker Fisker and its assets to Chinese auto parts giant Wanxiang, according to local reports on Tuesday. Wanxiang, which also bought up bankrupt battery maker A123 Systems in late 2012, won the bid over Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li’s company Hybrid Technology, and the auction occurred over the end of last week. As Quartz put it, the auction had “pitted two Chinese billionaires against one another: Wanxiang’s Lu Guanqiu vs. Hong Kong telecoms titan Richard Li.” Wanxiang bid $149 million for Fisker, which is substantially larger than some earlier prices that had been offered, but just a fraction of Fisker’s valuation at one time. Lu’s advantages were that Wanxiang owns A123 — which made the batteries for Fisker’s Karma car — and also that he appeared to be willing to bail out unsecured creditors. Ray Lane’s Fisker Karma Wanxiang has said if it wins the bid it can soon restart production on Fisker’s first electric car, the Karma, and it can start providing parts and services for current Karmas on the roads. It will also resume development of the second car, the Atlantic. Only about 2,000 Karmas were sold before Fisker stopped production. Wanxiang’s U.S. division, based in Elgin, Illinois, has 6,000 workers in the U.S. and $2.5 billion in annual revenue. The Chinese company has a total of $13 billion in revenue and 45,000 employees across the world. The head of Wanxiang America, Pin Li, called cleantech “the new frontier for civilization,” in an interview with me a couple years ago. The company is involved in all types of clean technology, from electric cars, to solar, to wind farms, to batteries. Wanxiang has also invested $420 million into GreatPoint Energy, a company based in Cambridge, Mass. that converts coal into cleaner-burning natural gas. At the time that deal was described by the Wall Street Journal as “the largest ever by a Chinese corporation into a venture-capital-funded U.S. company.” Wanxiang also invested in another struggling company electric car company Smith Electric Vehicles. As with Wanxiang’s deal with A123, controversy will follow the realization that a Chinese conglomerate will likely be taking over an electric car maker that got substantial funding from the U.S. government. But as I reported yesterday, there’s money coming from Asia for some of these hard to fund cleantech innovations. Is the world ready for more Karmas? The car received weak reviews and the brand has been tarnished substantially. But clearly there’s been high demand for Tesla and its cars, so if a revived Fisker can overcome its past problems, it could find a market for its cars.

According to the CNN polls, 67% voted that Romney won. This percentage is in itself a record since no presidential candidate has crossed the 60% mark before. Apparently Obama was very off form and let Romney attack. There was no mention of the 47% comment. Maybe the American Taliban Party have a chance after all?

Keeps going to Start Up repair function, but yet fail to repair properly. So It just keeps repeating this cycle. Tried to boot in safe mode but in vain, as it keeps going to start up repair. Any repair shop to recommend which can help in the recovery of my hard disk data? Many thanks

Mdm Zhu Yun Ping (50, hawker) had visited the casino with some foreign friends and her store helpers at about 5am on this Tuesday, 18 October. She described what happened to reporters, "I was playing on this jackpot machine until 6am and my stored value card had already accumulated about $800 in winnings. Suddenly, I struck the Bonus Cash jackpot of $416,742.11." At the time, Mdm Zhu was confused with what happened until a bystander explained to her that she had struck a jackpot prize. Many other casino patrons also came up to her to congratulate her on the win. She continued, "Soon after, the manager of the casino came up to me and told me that the jackpot machine had malfunctioned. The manager explained to me that the machine's top prize is a car, and that its highest cash payout is only $50,000, so I could not have struck that Bonus Cash prize. The manager also explained that I could get $258,962 if I decide to sell the car back to the dealer." Mdm Zhu refused to settle with the manager's explanation and insisted that she was entitled to her win, which the jackpot machine clearly displayed. At that time, a casino patron had also stepped forward to help her by taking a photo of the displayed cash prize as evidence. The man was however, stopped by casino staff who warned him that photo-taking is not allowed in the casino. The staff then asked the man to hand over his phone and indicated that they will be deleting the photo. The man was then escorted out of the casino. Mdm Zhu has lodged a complaint with the Casino Regulatory Authority of Singapore, which is currently investigating the case. ST Forum HOME > ST FORUM > ONLINE STORY Jan 7, 2011 Dishonesty wins, integrity loses LAST week, while driving to work, my car was hit from behind at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 1 and Corporation Road. The rear of my beige Toyota Vios was hit by a dark blue Peugeot van. The driver, a man in his 40s, apologised and said that his van had rolled forward while he was picking up something from the vehicle floor. He had forgotten to engage his handbrake, he said. I checked the rear of my car while he kept assuring me that it was a gentle knock which could not have caused much damage. There were some slight scratches on the bumper and its right side was dislodged. The driver knocked it back into place, saying it was just a clip. I asked for his contact number and wrote down his identity card number and vehicle plate number. He did not ask me for the same. When I arrived at work half an hour later, a friend joined me to inspect the car more closely. She pointed to a 10cm crack on the rear bumper. I sent the driver a photo of the damage via Multimedia Messaging Service and said I would need to go to Borneo Motors for the repairs as my car was still under warranty. He called and discouraged me from going to Borneo Motors as he was sure it would escalate the price of repairs. He asked me to send my car to his workshop in Kaki Bukit instead. I decided to go to Borneo Motors for an assessment and quotation first before meeting him at his workshop at 3.30pm. At Borneo Motors, the motor claims assessor advised me that I had to replace the bumper and realign the boot door. The repair would take three days and cost $1,358. She reminded me that any repairs done at other workshops would void the car's current warranty on the repaired part. She also cautioned me that there may be leakage problems in the car boot if repairs were not done properly. I reiterated that to the driver. He questioned how it could be possible that the boot alignment could be affected by a gentle hit. "You must understand that I am only an employee, I don't earn much. I don't want to cause any trouble to my company (he was driving his company car)", he said repeatedly. He would pay only if the repairs were done at his workshop. In the end, we agreed to report the accident to our insurers. I would claim third party insurance from his company. A surveyor's inspection was planned on Dec 30 and the day before, a staff member from Borneo Motors informed me that the third party insurer had rejected my claims as the driver's report was in conflict with mine. His report stated that I had reversed my car and hit his car. I was appalled. I called his cellphone four times but my calls went unanswered. I used my friend's phone to call him and he picked up the call. He was stumped when I asked him about what he had stated in the accident report. He defended his stand and told me he would leave it to the insurance company to take care of it before hanging up on me. I was naive and did not anticipate the driver distorting the truth to reduce his liability. With only his word against mine and no statement from independent witnesses, it is likely that I will have to withdraw the claim and pay the full amount of $1,358 myself. Otherwise, the losses to me will be greater in the long term if I claim from my own insurance policy, which has a 50 per cent no-claims discount. If justice decides it will do me a favour this time, I may be lucky enough to find a witness to the accident through this letter - failing which, all I can say is that a man's integrity is priceless.
