What gives the characteristic sound of a car, engine or exhaust note?

I heard a GTR with titanium exhaust, does it bring out the V6 engine note?

IIts the engine that produces the exhaust gas but its the exahust that allows you to hear the sound. If the exhaust is well muffled then there will be hardly any sound.

just based on gut feel, cos it all depends very much on the car in question

for a person outside the said car, the exhaust note would be the most distinct, followed by the supercharger scroll note. thereafter it's the intake note or engine note.

for a person inside the car, it depends very much on the insulation and setup. sometimes engine/intake note can be more significant than exhaust note,

Titanium HKS Legamax exhaust? It's the exhaust that brings out the loud rumbling for the GTR.

Its a combination of intake, engine, and exhaust.

Or if you wanna be laughed at... install turbo sound speaker. If not turbo whistle...

Actually the exhaust sound is a function of both the exhaust set up (header, muffler, and catalytic converter) and the engine itself. Frequently owners of small capacity cars e.g., honda fit, over do it and install large diameter, free flow exhausts on their rides. The end result is that you have a bassy but hollow sounding exhaust. Conversely when a large capacity engine e.g., that in a maserati granturismo, is mated to a free flow exhaust, the end result is pure orgasmic.

cats and mufflers yes of course affect the sound...

but err... i dont think the header aka extractors aka intake manifold affect sound at all...

right?

The number of cylinders in a car plays a big part too...

4 cylinder only sound average

inline 6 and V6 sounds better than 4 cylinder

V8 sounds better than 4 and 6 cylinders

V10 sounds higher pitch when u rev high rpm

V12 is simply wonderful even at idle

Of course end of the day....number of cylinders, exhaust etc plays the complete role of that unique sound of each car [drivingcar]

apologies for the quick and dirty post yesterday as it was hastily typed using my iphone.

the reason for me asking is because i want to find out the reason behind a nice sounding car. the engine or exhaust?

Alfas are said to have a nice engine note too. i test drove the 159, but i find the engine note to be normal only. is there something that needs to be done to "bring out the sound"? Alfistis, don't get me wrong. i'm not bashing the 159. in fact that remains my favourite bella [inlove]

The GTR that i mentioned in my first post had a quad titanium exhaust and it sounded real nice during idle at a traffic light. it is not rumbly at all, very smooth sounding. when it moves off, it goes "mmmmmmmmm" in a midrange pitch... machiam the tone of those big cc bikes sound (but louder and nicer lah). but stock looking GTRs are pretty quiet at idle and during moving off..

therefore what brings out the characteristic sound of a car...is it just by changing the muffler OR changing the air intake OR both?

my opinion is that open pods muffle out the engine during WOT. as a result the roar is actually the open pod and not the engine itself. whereas by keeping to the stock intake and changing the muffler, both the engine and muffler sound combines to produce the "actual" sound the car is supposed to have. is it right?

For GTR it's the exhaust. Quad titanium typically HKS Legamax. However, if the mid-high range note is like a V8, it's usually a de-cat in addition. Twin racing suction can't be heard at all on the GTR.

On an Evo, the racing suction is quite obvious. Some of the Evos have the swooshing sound when they rev - this is due to the intake of air via the racing suction as the throttle opens. The exhaust note is typically more subdued even on comparable exhaust systems.

Just out of curiosity, was the GTR black with HKS logo on the rear?
