wats the market rate for checking by mechanic

Other the other hand, mechanic opinion can only serve as a guide, coz they view things base on their technical point of view and they may think the car worth much lower than your buying price and may affect your buying decision and you may not buy the car eventually based on what your mechanic said.

You may repeat this cycle till the "perfect" car comes, but the questions is "when"?

Your mechanic just need to give you his honest opnion on the condition and its for you to judge see if you are comfortable paying the price or not, best part, can use it as a card to further reduce the price from dealer.

Twincharged

Normally I ask my own mechanic check. I don't think should ask them how much they think it should be worth. I normally ask my mechanic to tell me what problems he thinks it has and how much will it cost if really need to repair.

so u guys will normally request for mechanic to inspect after agreeing on an initial price or talk abt price after inspection

there were reports of some dealers insisting that if mechanic substantiate that the car is accident free, there is obligation to buy...

of cos i know that we can walk off as long as we did not sign anything

The arrangement is simple. Agreed on the purchase price based on the mechanic's report. If ok buy, if not ok

just walk away.

so the norm is to agree on a price first before going to mechanic, rite?

That is what I did. Agreed on the price ( only buying price and transfer fee ) and will buy if the report is ok.

All else is a NO.

by right, as the car is under the owner's name (before transferring of name), these dealers are not supposed to be driving the car because the owner will still be liable for all kinds of traffic offences (as mentioned by LTA)

Thus, the black and white must state the time and date when you sold off the car to the dealer (and they should settle the transfer of ownership within 7 days) if not, you can sue the dealer. better still, make a police report if you saw your car being driven around (as what i did for my previous ride)

Please be aware that it is illegal. even if they are going to 'test' your car, it can only be down after the transfer of ownership plus early settlement.

if they are going to drive your car to their workshop, they would have to tow the car there and not drive there (because you are still liable for traffic offences)

I had my experience with this dealer (who did not settle my transfer of ownership and early settlement for 3 months), in the end I got a traffic summon from LTA. luckily, I have already made a police report stating when I've sold my car plus informing them that I've seen my car being driven around.

When I bought my 4 yr car, the dealer sent it to my mech himself. So I saw the bottom of my car first rather than the top. Together with my mech we inspected the car for any signs of previous accidents and then test drove the car for the engine. There and then my mech talked to the dealer saying brake pad must change and the wiper also must replace. Everything else swee swee.

Mechs only give their technical view on the roadworthiness of the car. Whatever price you pay for it is not their problem.

Sadly most new buyers are too eager to get a car that they do not pay much attention to the engine and the feel of the car. If you are buying a car for the first time, do get an experienced fella to tag along and listen to his opinion.

Those cars with a bit of scratch here and there I don't mind because it's the original condition. Those cars that are polished shiny to the max I look twice because half the time below the hood got langgar marks of major accidents. A car that has been involved in major accident will not be the same as normal because no matter how swee it is repaired, there will always be misaligned parts somewhere that makes it relatively 'imperfect' to drive. This may cause more road noise, misaligned steering, easily overheating engines and many more.

So do avoid cars that has been involved in major accidents unless they give you a price no sane fella can refuse :)

Just another thought.

How about those AD's authorised 2nd hand car dealer; Auto republic, Cartimes, premium auto etc.

Are their supposed 100 points check trustworthy?

I noticed that All their cars are polished and shinny like showroom condition. I read above some bros here stated must beware of car that are groom and polished shinny like show room condition.

And also any knowledge on whether these authorised 2nd hand car dealer tune the mileage?

I have never bought premium cars [blush]

All my previous cars are bread and butter Jap cars...

But just to note that open the hood look at engine is already one point. Check car have 4 tires already another point. haha! How many checks to make up a hundred? But they are supposed to be 'authorized' dealers so "sound" like trustworthy but never tried them before.
