i'm one of the drivers who stay and work at the ends of the island, daily i have to drive along PIE to get to work. of late, i see that PIE is "sinking" at certain parts of the PIe- namly after Xilin Ave towards Jurong, there are ridges and sections of the road are apparently raised after it had sunk in...another area is at kallang junction after the downwards slope where you can see a dip on the expressway.

is the standard where we built our expressways dropped?

I believe you are right, although I like to believe you are not right about your observation

There are such thing as underground rivers/streams (both natural and artificial)

When we de-hydrate a place, we really introduce some small system of channeling undergound water by pumping the water away. Once dehydrated, the soil collapse and we notice settlement or sinking

The more we dehydrate the ground, the more sinking/settlement we create

Since many years back, our government had banned extraction/de-hydration of underground water. However, temporary dehyration still allowed

When such dehydration is carried out way below the surface, its takes much longer to recover, if ever.

With the network of tunnelling works for trains, sewage system and the highway on tiny island Singapore..

i'm not surprise if the island is sinking and flooding increase as the natural groundwater supposedly holding up the land is either gone or not able stay at its natural location. The side effects will be felt as and when certain factors are breached.

I believe each time we excavate below water-table, we dig ourselves into bigger future dangers/problems. Could the Nicol Highway accident be our 1st fatal alert to disasters creation/generation?

Anyone with better ideas to share?

They are creating too many underground MRT tunnels.

If 1 day, a small portion of the area underneath the tunnel give way, and there are some building on top of it, we'll have a incident much worse than the Spyro accident.
