Well. Some people don't buy pre-owned. I am one of them. Once bitten, twice shy. Oh and of course, I lack the necessary temperament to buy pre-owned. I would rate myself as 8 out of 10 on my likelihood of getting cheated by a used car dealer.

It takes all sorts to make the world. People are still buying brand new Jap cars. For example, the Altis is still selling well despite competition from conti brands like Renault or VW. I personally know some folks who could comfortably afford a VW Jetta and booked the Altis because they liked it a lot more. Would you still consider it smart to top up with a higher loan for a car they liked less?

Hmm.... i wonder how many of the folks you gave in the example are out there....

the facelift Altis has been in the market for a few months already, and i'm hardly seeing any on the roads.....

oh, by the way, the Altis and Jetta are selling for roughly the same price, with $10k differentiating them.....

i suppose most would go for VW's....especially the Jetta sedan, or the current best-selling VW model, the Touran MPV....

people still have that stigma with Citroen, Opel and Renault i guess....

Why must you say "inconsiderate young drivers"? it's just "inconsiderate drivers" without the "young". I am 22yo and I believe I'm consider young on the road.

When u r younger, u r prone to be more hot blooded, less responsible n more passionate. You have more room for error due to a faster reflex, psychologically more willing to take risk.

That is statistics, n insurance companies are not stupid, they have professional actuarers To calculate risks

Only way to control COE is to ask our GARMENT to intro a limited number of new applicant applying for driving licence. Just like going for examination in school. If new applicant doesn't meet the requirement just throw away the application.

No new driver mean no purchase of new car or used car. that is the way.

GARMENT using COE to control buying power is just NOT right honestly...guess everybody know is all about $$$$ lor...

GARMENT should formulate a max number of new driver, meaning each year GARMENT will only allow about 500 to 1000 new drivers to be ABLE to qualify for driving test, if they fail, they will have to go thru the whole cycle again and thus this will help to ease our traffic jam, traffic accidents.

Not only this will help new driver to treasure their licence, it will also give a signal to all old drivers if they have their licences revoke. They will have to wait for years to have their chance for a driving test. It creates safety driving instead. Good right?

This restriction also able to increase the revenue of all public transportation, because old driver had their licence revoke and public transports are the only way for their travelling needs. So why not intro this ASAP????

I really don't wish to buy a car where i need to fork out another sum of money to buy a piece of paper worth the more than the OMV value>.Is crazy man!

Gosh...can somebody speak up??? can somebody write to our GARMENT?

I would prefer our government to impose a special tax on top of the COE for families who wants to own a 2nd car and above. Tax to be impose at 50K and above.

IMO, family should properly planned each individual schedule and maximise their only car usage more efficiently. Every family should be given a fair chance to own a car if they are really in need of one.

Why must you say "inconsiderate young drivers"? it's just "inconsiderate drivers" without the "young". I am 22yo and I believe I'm consider young on the road. People signal, I will give way even if they wanna cut me in front unless I'm queueing for a full carpark. haha~ Also, I have experience not once, but twice so far, putting signal and changing lane and some old uncle on that lane from far behind (at least 20m) just gotta speed up even though the gap is so damn big and his itchy fingers just got to high beam and horn me once he reach near my backside and sad to say, they look at least in the forties to fifties and not some young drivers. Normally I change lane in congested places, most of the time the older people won't give way.

Okay.. Next up, food for thought. For younger people, it doesn't matter if the price increase. Their parents got the money to buy a car for their children to begin with. What makes you think the younger people out there won't drive their parent's car if they didn't buy them one. [sunny]

PS: Don't tell me when you say young drivers, you meant age 25+. [knife][whip]

Yup, no big deal in owning a car. But without a car, we did worry about transport if we are going out till late at night.. lastly, i hope you don't take any offence here and enjoy your ride. ^^

ya agree, cannot put the blame on us young driver, last month when i come back from woodland after some late supper.

there is an old uncle like in the 40+ wind down window, and with a cigarette out of the window, overtake me and press brake, and then come beside me again, like he own the road. as is already very late at sembawang road, there is no car, so i see no road hogging, as i am already like on 80km in the middle lane.

maybe he is trying to impress the lady he hook up some where, that his 2.4 litre super toyota camry, and bully small little car like mine

1) I'm pretty glad that the COE is high, so as to make ppl think thrice about owning a car, which the question is "Do they really need one?"

-> This is to those of lower/middle income family. If to fork out this high COE to owe a car, i think taking a cab is far more cheaper (Though you might have to wait/queue for a while, and at times when u need a cab, it just dun appear -> Owe a car = convenient)

-> I personally prefer BMW, but due to work, without a car, i'm without a job.

-> There are simply too many cars in SG. For example,in a public holiday, i was caught in a serious jam after Tuas Checkpoint, just after the linking bridge (Still got about less than 5km to reach JB customs, i think), 90% are SG cars and it took me almost 3hours to reach JB Customs, "4" lanes were packed with cars. (This is just 2nd link, how about the jam at 1st link/woodlands?)

-> How about SG highway jams? CTE/PIE Changi/Tuas/AYE/TPE in the morning and evening?

2) For high COE, maybe some rich families buying cars for their children, maybe a number of rich PRs also buying for themselves/children, maybe some ppl in the oil& gas industries, LTA, PUB,and some government sectors getting fat bonuses?

Well after paying so much $ fr their cars, all these pple hv to find ways to cut costs so all go Msia fr cheap holdays, cheap petrol, cheap ciggies, cheap groceries, cheap meals, cheap entertanment, etc etc etc. :D

Isn't controlling the numbers of COE restricting business?

There are many ways to issue a COE without having this crazy price - by using a queue system like the one used by HDB before the BTO scheme, lottery (lucky draw) or incentive schemes (encouraging couples to have more kids) ... etc

But then gharmen wont make so much $.

Then how to pay our ministers their multi million $ salaries?

Ty 'worked' so hard thinking of ways n means how to get as much $ as possible fm e pple, let them hv their rewards ah.

erm...i think going to msia for the cheaper alternatives, doesn't means that all of them are scrimping...but i rather feel that it's a short vacations at a reasonable affordable $$$.

My point is that based on that jam i had faced, you can see a fat dragon of SG cars, just based on that Tuas link-> JB customs.

I remembered recently that they reported that civil servants/government sectors (SAF, MOE, MOH, etc) will get pretty decent bonuses?

Once given out these millions of bonuses, i think they have already planned (months ago) to get some of these millions back from these recent COEs. [laugh]

I was caught up there too. Actually just 1-2KM away from JB Customs, took me 2 hours to reach there.

haha unfortualtely, i am 1 of the secured bidder today, as my old mcs is problematic, i am forced to change to a new mcs with this sky high coe -_-

and beside the 2nd hand car market is not totally getting the impact for the high coe yet, i was browsing through some 2nd hand car, and find that the pricing for 2nd hand car is still low.

Yet you get a new one. I guess some people just prefer new stuff, hence there is always a market despite the sky high price.
