Roh96 6th Gear January 18, 2011 Share January 18, 2011 I agree with you Bro Roh96. I bought a 4 yr old Nissan Latio CVT last yr ard 63K mileage and stupidly didn't research abt CVT GB. Later learnt abt how the CVT GB for Latio is prone to failing after abt 4-5 yrs old and it cost ard $17K just to replace it.... wapiang, got scared, it was like you said - driving a time bomb! I also KS, even installed a Hayden ATF cooler to try to prolong the GB but I was still very worried abt the GB. When the price was right, I sold it off in Dec and bought a 2nd hand Altis.... now peace of mind. Although some ppl say all auto GB the same, I beg to differ. I don't want to take such a risk. I'm never touching another CVT GB car ever again.... 17K to replace the CVT GB is ridiculous. The OMV of the car is <17K, the GB alone cost more than the whole car? ↡ Advertisement
Itsec 2nd Gear January 18, 2011 Share January 18, 2011 The previous gen of Jazz and Fit auto are all using CVT gearbox. The pre-face lift of previous civic(ES model 1.5A) also using CVT. Now Honda is moving away from CVT. I guess they had enough of complaints. it's KM that stay away from cvt Gb... JDM model such as fit / hybrid is using cvt gb... cvt gb need extra care nia... Friedpiggy 2nd Gear January 22, 2011 Share January 22, 2011 (edited) ATF Cooler is a good investment if you drive long distance or you are utilizing your car heavily. I have one installed in my ride. However, in my opinion, preventive maintenance is still the best cure. whats the damage for the ATF cooler? How does it work? like radiator style? The first time i changed the CVT ATF was at 80k together with the timing belt change(and i still thought i had it done early as i mis-read the manual and i thought it was a 100k thing... sh1t...) Well now 90k already luckily the GB is still running good though. Edited January 22, 2011 by Friedpiggy

Proton_neutron 1st Gear January 23, 2011 Share January 23, 2011 If the owners do take care of the oil changes I am positively sure the failures will be minimal, though the question if the gearbox is as durable as the standard auto is questionable, as many sites have indicated that a well cared CVT gearbox has a lifespan of 120-160K km, while an standard box will last far longer with minimal maintenance! Are the above infos true? My Airwave gearbox just gameover at 220 000 km. A mechanic I spoke to told me that this is a very common problem. One of his customer's Odyssey game over at 160 000km. What happened when your gearbox kaput? Car cannot drive? If CVT gearbox kaput very fast, then all the PI Taxi's will have to fork out a huge amount of money to replace the CVT Transmission in their fleet? Your car manual would have specified the stipulated intervals for the change.

Transmission gearbox drain plug was leaking. What independence surveyor, if it's leaking CVTF, quickly get a mechanic top it up and get it fixed before any harm is done. don't wait. Boyvalentino Neutral Newbie January 23, 2011 Share January 23, 2011 If you can read the forum from SPEC (Singapore Previa Estima Club) you will know the whole story. The gearbox has been totally kaput and stripped apart. All rubbing surfaces badly scored. Workshop trying to claim that the damage is only normal wear and tear; nothing to do with insufficient CVT oil. Need opinions and help soonest. Vehicle already in workshop since 3th January. Thank you.
Pocus Turbocharged January 23, 2011 Share January 23, 2011 A fren of mine driving colt version r auto cvt.... His mileage more than 100k...cvt still very gd with no problem He likes to track at pg n sic...but I was surprise till now his cvt still running strong... He changes cvt oil every 40k...dunno wat is his secret in maintaining the cvt You fren's Colt R most probably isn't modded, or it's modded within the CVT's limit. For a stock Colt R the CVT can take the punishment. But if the engine was modded, the CVT can easily kaput as it's not tuned to handle the increase torque or power. For Colt Rs, anything above 250nm of torque is in danger zone. Anyway, proper care and extra maintenance can help prolong CVT lifespan. - ATF change at half the recommended intervals. For our Colt R is 40km so I change ATF every 20k. - Use only the recommended stock ATF as most CVT are sensitive to their respective ATF. - Installing a ATF cooler may prolong the CVT gearbox as it helps to reduce temperature, esp in our humid tropical climate. - Reduce the frequency of dragging the CVT in tiptronic mode or OD off will help with the lifespan. - Above all, if you mod your ride, mod within the limits of the CVT. Pisces69 6th Gear February 22, 2011 Share February 22, 2011 Pardon my ignorance, does ATF mean Automatic Transmission Fluid? "Destroy ATF", does it mean fluid overheat and loose lubricating ability or other meaning? Correct on both points.

Kangadrool Supersonic February 22, 2011 Share February 22, 2011 Parts alone are always expensive one. Imagine a set of right and left wing mirrors already cost $1,000 easily. Not surprising for a gearbox. ↡ Advertisement
