I think a more appropriate word to use will be "BRING". Fetch is when you go to a place and get something or someone. And yes, it does sound like a word for dogs and pets.

 

So what?? Don't you know that in Singapore these days, especially among younger married couples, dogs and other pets are the new "children"? [laugh]

 

Just take a look at newspapers, sunday times life section, quite often there will be interview with a young married couple, and the couple will invariably be shown posing for a "family" photo with their furry "kids".

 

Hence in Singapore, "fetch" is becoming more and more acceptable!!!

Right. Those who really have kids in childcare (and not just armchair critics), will agree that the most important job of the childcare is to ensure good care of the children, especially in teaching and instilling good habits concerning eating, napping, toilet training, etc.

I suspect, the reason for spoken and writen language are primary for communication.

 

Now. what is number 1 rule for communication. It is to understand and be understand.

 

Does that letter serve that purpose?? yes. Then what is the concern about the grammer or vocab error??

Agree that he is trying to find fault. If the principal uses fetch, he complains that it is to bring dogs. If the P uses bring, he will complain that it is used for inanimate objects.

 

From what I see, he is just scoring points from the pro-opposition camp and to make himself look like he is with the 'common folk'. Who knows what agenda he has?

Not for me...I do expect teachers to use correct english, the only reason I am not constantly ranting is that its an uphill battle that I would exhaust myself on fighting.

Be humble, and request parents/guardians to pick kids up on time......Then, give reasons like family bonding lah, this lah that lah, if late, please call up to inform centre lah (you know some people has no common sense; need specific instructions), etc, etc lah (in customers' perspectives rather than dumping staff grievances to customers). Am sure, these Atas organisation and people will know how to put it in their nice powderful england. [laugh]

 

The principal speaks like their grandmaster.... talk down approach. Till the day their grandmaster learn how to be humble, it's unlikely the kakias in his organisation will do the same

It would not be hard to come up with a more accurate, less "open to interpretation" construction.

 

If you show "please fetch you children on time" to someone from out of Singapore it will absolutely raise questions as to exactly what you mean.

 

Just like the difference between take and bring - they are so often confused, but they do have different meanings - use the wrong one in the wrong place and you will get the wrong result.
