Depends on the vehicle, how much it has to slow down and the type of hump.

If the vehicle is a van or lorry, or a lowered car, especially with bodykit, and thus having to crawl over the hump, my usual method will be to brake almost to a crawl, shift to neutral, only shifting back to gear 1 or 2 if the momentum is not enough to carry across the hum, carefully crawl over, engage gear and move off.

If the vehicle is a normal car, will usually simply brake to a suitable speed, downshift, stay in gear and move over the hump.

Everyone's technique and every vehicle is different, stick with whatever works best for you.

For me, already used to dropping to second gear..then brake somemore and go over the hump at bout 10kph while still braking. After the hump, usually shift to 1st gear and pick up again.

how about changing to 1st?

some cars have a very low 1st gear and changing to 1st means you'll be restricted to <10km/h

when travelling at 60km/h and having to slow down all the way to 10km/h can be quite painful

sometimes i cross humps at 20km/h, for smaller humps sometimes even higher so i don't really like to slow till 1st gear

I cross humps at 10km/h using 1st gear. If i cross at 20 km/h my butt will be even more painful lol...

While crossing I usually clutch in and let the car slowly roll...i don't know why but if i leave my clutch engaged in 1st gear my car jerks like hell without stepping the throttle.

During test drive, the sales guy told me to drive as if on flat road, the suspension can entertain the hump (I am not sure about the service life of the shock absorbers).

I usually slowed down to engage a 2nd gear (manual transmission), and accelerate off after crossing the hump.

I always reduce speed, change to appropriate gear, depress the clutch and drive over it.

After the hump, release clutch and continue driving.

Don't know why I always depress the clutch but it always happen naturally.

Maybe afraid the engine will die due to slow speed. :D

Twincharged

I just see how fast I am going over the hump. But usually is downshift to second then brake and downshift to first while on the hump to accelerate off.

I will coast across the hump in neutral gear. My dad explained that the bump won't be transmitted from the wheels back through the powertrain. I've always done it like that since.
