If this happens to u.

Your wife's ex suddenly called her and said that he has loan a sum of $5k to her father 10+ yrs ago and now wants the $$$ back.

After verification with her father, the loan did take place. So the guy demands the payment of the $5K immediately as he has urgent need.

For me, its a damn TL thing. whole life only people owe me $$$ and dun pay, now someone related to me owes someone else $$$ and i have to pay om behalf [furious]

I'd pay if and only if the following conditions are all met:

1) Your FIL (father in law) is incapable of settling the loan by himself.

2) He has no other children (especially earning males) to support him.

3) Your wife is not working, or is earning too little to pay on her father's behalf.

If you're paying up on behalf of the FIL, you should also find out why the loan was made - was it for an "honest" purpose like starting a business, etc. or was it to gamble? And is there a chance this sort of situation will recur? You should put your foot down and state categorically that this will be the first and last time for this sort of thing.

All the same, I'm surprised the creditor is not asking for interest. 5k for over a decade can generate a fair bit of interest. Even 5% simple interest over that period comes to 2.5k. Lucky the fella is not so calculative.

1) incapable (retired)

2) have a son

3) wife working parttime

loan was taken to settle debts from biz failure. there wasnt any evidence loan was made, so he cant ask for interest.

Sorry - what's the usual arrangement for FIL's support - does he stay with son? Does your wife contribute to his usual upkeep?

Does his son earn enough comfortably to cover this, or not? Can your wife bear part of the burden, with you chipping in also?

You don't owe me (or anyone else on this forum) an answer to these personal questions, but I suggest you think about them for yourself and come to a rational decision. My motto has always been "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" - and I have my dad to thank for drilling that into me from a young age.

that guy also CMI, 10 years ago still want to come back and ask.... <_<

I'd imagine it's probably not a case of "want" but rather "need" which does kinda influence my decision a little....

if he's desperate enough to look up a 10 year old debt, something is probably going pretty bad in his life.
