Vid Hypersonic October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 In all fairness, Qantas used to be a pretty good airline. Took it several times. But these few years always got strike every now and then.
Sosaria Twincharged October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 The Qantas top management has been embroiled in dispute with their employee unions for a long time. The unions suka-suka can threaten to strike and cause cancellation of flights, so I think the top management also fed up and finally suspend everything to show the unions that they can no longer be threatened this way. I think the unions also shocked... and now got no more cards to play. The Qantas management has called their bluff. I think it is also a gamble by the Qantas top management to pressurise the australian govt to act to curb the unions. So they've indeed learned something from singapore!! "Some heads need to be cracked...", to quote someone But will the australian govt take action like s'pore's?? Remains to be seen...
Donut Supercharged October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 Its a good move. I fully support. The mgt won't be submitted to labour threats. They close the airline, to make the point across that they are not scared of workers not coming to work. Each day lose $27 million. See who can tahan longer. Airline closed, workers dont get paid, garment got no face in international arena. Airline mgt just sit there and see who will throw in the towel first. All these western countries, the labour union are taking things for granted. They think they can suka suka ask for higher pay, and whatever, and expect airline to give in? The keyword here is USED. The service suxs, planes are old, way too many near misses, charge 5-star price for 3.5-star quality. More humane to let the kangaroo die quickly than suffer a prolonged and painful death as it is simply not competitive in this part of the world. XenonWhite 1st Gear October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 I strongly support the move of Qantas to halt all services to show the Union wanna die, all die.. But to increase the salary of the top management at this pt is definitely a no-no!!

Sosaria Twincharged October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 (edited) Its a good move. I fully support. The mgt won't be submitted to labour threats. Airline closed, workers dont get paid, garment got no face in international arena. Airline mgt just sit there and see who will throw in the towel first. All these western countries, the labour union are taking things for granted. They think they can suka suka ask for higher pay, and whatever, and expect airline to give in? Yes, as always, the best solution is somewhere in between. The labour unions are agitating because Qantas is profitable, surprisingly, and the top executives are perceived to be taking advantage of this to raise their salaries and bonuses, while very little actually trickles down to the rest of the employees. Furthermore, the management is trying to increase this profitability by outsourcing the maintenance work, and even starting a subsidiary based in asia (where labour rules are weaker or almost non-existent, govts are more pro-big business, and exploitation of workers is easier!) - leading to job losses for the aussies. But the unions' worry about outsourced "cheaper, better, faster" maintenance/repair work being shoddy and poorer quality also has some truth... It is a "hard truth" that you can only have 2 out of 3... so as a passenger, I'd be a bit worried. Edited October 30, 2011 by Sosaria
Sosaria Twincharged October 30, 2011 Share October 30, 2011 they dun know what is cheaper, better, faster? This sounds like a job for the cheaper-better-faster-man I think he won't last long dealing with the aussie labour unions under their laws!
