FT son trying to siam NS

I don't get how the government can refuse to allow him to give up citizenship until he has served.

He has legal citizenship in another country, is not up to Singapore to stop that. Forcing him to serve NS at this point is akin to slave labour.

Just doesn't make sense - so long as another country willing to accept he should be free to go. What are we - communists living behind the iron curtain? North Koreans that must prevent defections?

Supercharged

With TT's son, we have no choice but if this leech does get away with this, Singaporeans will remember this "open door with plentiful of freebies FT policy" and will payback with interest during the next GE.

that is why you are not the government.

Seriously, make that bugger servce. then see if any FT still think can happily happily convert to citizen then when their son time to servce NS give out or not.

better still, if they dont want to servce, just throw them to jail for 2 years. like what happen to those JW who refuse to servce NS.

I can see how they want him to serve, and I also see how it is morally correct that he serves (after all - he was educated here, so why shouldn't he do his service to the nation)

What I don't get is what sort of a legal position the govt has to prevent him from giving up citizenship. If he wants to abandon ship, then it should be his prerogative.

How can any govt prevent you from giving up citizenship? It just doesn't seem right or appropriate. Like that, next time can my own govt say that I am not allowed to travel unless I pay a "working abroad tax" or something like that?

To force somebody to serve in the army before they are allowed to become citizens of another country feels very dictatorship, North Korea, Iron Curtain bad to me.....

Cant blame this ah thiong mah , it is our Ministar invited them here in the first place . Ministar have pass data to show that 50% of this kind of ah thiong around all this while and yet continue to import more and more each year at the expense of true blue Singaporean . Want cheap army , might as well sub-contract to Bangla , one hour $1 /= can liao, probably Bangla Army more loyal than Ah Thiong Army .

Is Hongkie, not Ah Tiong.

Wah lau, although i know this forum is anti-FT, but at least read the article first! [laugh]

Huh? So now must repay the govt?

Is this a country or a corporation?

I have never ever never heard of any country before where you serve a bond - except for maybe north korea or east germany.

so u are saying he can take our schools, pay subsidised sch fees then fark off without serving ns?

if he does it, every other FT will try to do it.

his 2 years is just to "repay" all the benefits he was given as a pink IC holder

This is more of a corporation. The world's most efficient one at that.

We dont believe in a welfare society neither do we believe in useless freeloaders, foreign or otherwise.

If you have accepted so much from our country then you better damn well do your duty to the country

A round of applause please! [smash]

I think CMPB's comments within the article is already very clear. He is free to give it up after he has served the NS.

Agree with you.........its just not fair for them to leave like that.

Imagine 10,000 FT kids fight with your child for space in the poly or junior collegue. Abosrb all the sub & ben that comes with it.

After graduation they say NS not for me.......i wana fark off liao..........HOW CAN THIS BE FAIR ????

The 1st generation FT oredi avioded NS. Now the 2nd Gen want a piece of the cake too!!!!!!! [hur][furious]

You let this one FT kid have his way...........im very very sure the other 9,999 FT kids will want to do the same!!!
