KARTer 2nd Gear January 11, 2012 Share January 11, 2012 Mine is about 4yrs old, and ocassionally the signals are weak. But I believe such gadget is timeless life (almost) coz i cant think of any wear n tear parts inside what will be worn and affect its performance? How long has yours lasted? It's not expensive, sometimes feel like changing to a new one. ↡ Advertisement
Altivo 3rd Gear January 11, 2012 Share January 11, 2012 Mine 6 yrs leow... other than the few occasions when i go overseas for holiday... the router has been "on" for almost 6 yrs. Still functioning well!
Cerano 1st Gear January 11, 2012 Share January 11, 2012 4yrs yours should be 802.11G right? I think you should change yours. Actually there is wear and tear too all the heat eventually wears out the capacitors and chipset inside eg. Broadcom/ralink. People do not realise that there is a processor inside a router too. Upgraing to a wireless n router will give you better wifi speeds and networking capabilities

It's not expensive, sometimes feel like changing to a new one. Depends on the brand and model. Generally the older ones are more hardy as the the quality of the circuitry of the PCB (printed circuit board) as well as the chipset used is higher. Presently, in my knowledge there are only a few OEM chipset makers e.g. Broadcom, Ralink, Realtek, Atheros and Intel. The older Broadcom chipsets are very rock solid and resistant to heat. I rate Ralink and Atheros chipsets quite poorly. For example, the WRT54G (Broadcom chipset) that i still have is still going strong. I purchased that in 2004. So it is about 7 years old. Still surviving today and happily using it. For the past 8 years, it has been running 24/7. Never powered down for more than 1 hour.
Donut Supercharged September 3, 2014 Share September 3, 2014 I will revive this thread My Netgear, after 10 years of operations, start to give some problem. Well, a good 10 years of usage, 24/7 operation, its high time for retirement. I need some recommendation on the lastest router in the market, since i'm out of touch about routers for so long anyone can point to me some recommendation? I don't mind getting Netgear again, since my present one is so lasting I'm not using fibre. Just normal Starhub cable broadband. 24 hours switch on. I'm looking for cheap or affordable ones. You want the cheapest. Should be TP Link. My cisco one died after 1-2 yrs. Bought a cheap TP link for my father's place since just using ADSL. Good enough for the job. The latest routers won't benefit you. They are high end stuff. Low end stuff is still good enough for 90% of all users. See what devices u have lor. If u have new devices with AC wireless receivers instead of wireless N. Then get a cheap AC router. Edited September 3, 2014 by Lala81

TP Link for me. Been super happy with it for both my place and my mums. At my mum's I went for one with a higher db antenna because our old dlink kept getting interference from all our neighbours, and my sis was complaining about dropped signals. Good news is that I can get reception all the way at the open air carpark at the next block now

Not sure what is cheap and affordable to you but better get a reliable one (which can probably last 6-10 years). I would suggest one of the ASUS AC-routers in the market. You don't necessarily have to get the newest model as that will be more expensive.

SH fibre uses the Huawei as the ONT box (dunno what's the proper term). The D-Link is usually the router. Yeah the router's rubbish. I'm waiting for Black friday to see if can buy asus AC router from amazon. how about this model? it's really cheap http://list.qoo10.sg/item/TP-LINK-300MBPS-WIRELESS-N-ROUTER/410120406#none TP-LINK 300Mbps Wireless N Router TL-WR841N It's ok. Mcf777 Turbocharged September 3, 2014 Share September 3, 2014 I have Asus N56 and TP-link 300 for M1 fibre. Asus signal is better. In a 5-rm flat, all areas can receive full bar on my samsung tablet. But for TP-Link, some corner cannot receive at all.
KilluaX 1st Gear September 3, 2014 Share September 3, 2014 There is only 11 wireless channels. If many of your neighbors in the same block also using WIFI, the chances are you are sharing a channel with a few others. Like this you will get interference with each other and the WIFI speed will drop. My block really a lot of wireless router. During peak hour like weekends my WIFI speed can drop to as low as 5Mbps
