TVT Supercharged March 26, 2012 Share March 26, 2012 Feels like a pretty appropriate punishment, But I find it interesting that a university has the legal right to impose a fine.......that is eyeopening. Where got appropriate? You got to be joking! But then again, since the comment is from you, I am not surprised, as usual.

Littleknown Clutched March 26, 2012 Share March 26, 2012 (edited) Graduating from NUS doesn't suddenly give him a "leadership position in his field" because his degree won't grant him any magical powers. A scholar will be given leadership roles. For the school to take away 4 years of hard work from a person because of one remark on his blog would be unfair. Revoking his scholarship does not mean taking his degree - he can still graduate . Look at the sort of nonsense some Singaporeans write on their blogs; why should it be any different just because the author is from China and his target is Singapore? He made a remark against a country who feed him. He may be a sophisticated person but it was still no calculated remark. It was a blog post and he clearly didn't mean for it to be such a big deal. No big deal then it would not attract so much attention. It did. I agree that he should not have been given the scholarship in the first place but it is too late for regrets. Give cannot take back is a cardinal rule from primary school. The scholarship board did make a mistake in giving him the scholarship but they can't just unilaterally demand the money back when the bond contract doesn't call for it. You agree that he should NOT be given scholarship YET you take your stand - know that scholarship is a like a bonus - no scholarship does not mean no degree. Also, how would the scholarship board, through interviews, determine if a student is a hater of Singaporeans when it is so easy to lie about your intentions and motivations during an interview? It could not, hence as per what i said earlier - admit fault and take away his scholarship today Another chap was saying that 3 million Singaporeans were hurt by his remarks and that the fine was miniscule when divided by 3 million. If so, then what about those of us who insult PRCs? Should the PRC government catch them when they visit China and fine them a similar sum per citizen? Silly remark I agree. But using it to close your argument is even more stupid. On your part. You PRC or not, this is a worse crime to me. GTR78 Neutral Newbie March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 Are you stupid? Are you a foreigner? Are you both? Going by the letter of the rules of NUS, the offence warrants a sacking, and I have friends who were sacked from that place for lesser offences. Why is there double standards here? Special previlages for foreign talents and another draconian one for sons and daughters of Singapore??? It would be unreasonable for NUS to strip him of his degree? Grow a brain, that would be following the rules and regulations which NUS set. Why does NUS punish Singaporeans but is so lenient on foreign talents??? The precedent has been set, such offence results in a sacking, the East Asia Institute of Management has the balls to stand their ground, why is NUS such a pushover here????? EXPELLED: Chinese National who insulted Singaporeans in video His name is Wang Peng Fei, and he was a final-year student studying hospitality full-time at the East Asia Institute of Management here. For his "gross misconduct", the school has since expelled him and his student visa revoked. In his online video rant which went viral since it was posted on YouTube on Saturday (Jul 23), Wang mocked Singaporeans' lack of language skills in English and Mandarin, our MRT system and even our local food. He also seemed to take issue with the perception that 'China is poor' and made racist comments against minority groups here. The 24-year-old Chinese national had since apologised on his blog to 'all Singaporeans', explaining his video was only for comic relief and entertainment, and that he meant no harm. However, his 2-and-a-half years in Singapore are now numbered. According to a report in The New Paper today (Jul 26), EASB's executive director, Mr Er Kwong Wah, said, "Such behaviour calls for disciplinary actions to be instituted." He also went on to explain that the school has investigated the incident and decided to terminate Wang's studies "with immediate effect". "On termination by the school, his student pass will be cancelled. We will also advise him that he must hold a valid visa to stay in Singapore at all times and overstaying is a serious offence in Singapore," Mr Er continued. He added: "The school requires all students to observe proper conduct at all times. (The school) condemns all forms of actions that ridicule Singaporeans...insult any racial groups and cause hurt to any particular section of our population." This is the first time that the school has had to handle such an incident, said Mr Er. He also informed that Wang has accepted the school's decision. In addition, Wang will not be refunded this year's course fees of $10,000 because he broke a clause in his contract. What kind of punishment did you people expect? It was just ONE flippant remark. No matter how hurtful it was, I think the punishment is enough. Certainly, it is enough to deter future offenders. It would be unreasonable for NUS to strip him of his degree.
