Some Advice Needed for Consideration of New Car

Hi,

Just want to check with you guys here, currently I am driving a 1.5year old odyssey. Bought it before the COE went skyrocketed. Hence now if I were to dispose the car on the 2nd hand market I can get some cash back on top of outstanding value.

I was tempted by the offer by C&C for the new C180/C200. After calculating with pumping in the money after I sold my ody off, it should be more or less the same for installments monthly just that there will be no 'positive' returns if I will to dispose my car at any time. I am wondering if its a smart move to change from MPV 2.4 to a sedan 1.6/1.8. Generally the space is not much a consideration, but not sure if the power loss will be expected from a slightly lower cc car. Yes I do agree my heart sways to the finishing of the merc but logically I should hold onto the odyssey right as value wise its still positive value in some sense unless I were to drive till the end of lifespan of the car.

So should I consider the change?

Many thanks for the advise.

P.S. Nothing to do with the badge thing. Just looking for comparism of value for money worth.

Why not go down for a test drive to find out if the car is for you.

Overall the c class is a good car to have, not much issues and quite reliable.

If space is not of concern, I would go for the coupe.

Lot of difference between MPV and Sedan. C200 power is good but I do not think C&C can give similar discount as that of C180K. You would save in petrol, tax etc while compromising in space. Do your calculations and as the other bro pointed out, go and test drive too.

Bro , i used to own an odyssey, its definitely a great car, but fuel consumption not good. Belive the Mercedes will be more efficient, if space is not a conern anymore , i would say go for the merc.

Speaking form experience.. although changed to a different car, but still a 1.8L merc anyway, power wise you will not feel any difference at all.. but will enjoy the more torquey engine in pickup due to FI and max torque early in the rev. ODC pickup never impress me.. moreover the C class will be lighter.. and safety wise definitely there, does not lose out to the odc.

Highway cruising is similiar if not better, the only complain was space. 7 seater to a sedan.. you have to sacrifice somewhere. High speed pick.. odc could be better here due to a 2.4L engine, but the merc does not lose out much.

But you need to cal properly.. the depreciation of the merc will surely be more than your odc.. so you need to be comfortable with that.

Went to test drive the C180 today, the kompressor model.

My comments are driver's side was slightly smaller, accelerator was a bit stiff and generally the speed climb after mid range was abit forceful not sure how to describe but it was not generally bad. However i m abit surprise by the noise the engine created when i floored, loud but not so unpleasant. The good side was the finishing, the interior touch was sleek and a cocoon feeling. Generally my friend at the rear felt comfortable with the drive and space.

Didnt had the chance to try the C180 7gtronic model as it was very late after the test drive. However the SE also mention to me that the C180 1.8 model is sold out. Next available shipment in july, only left the C200 model available however price tag is at 22k plus higher than C180 1.8l. Is it worth it? I guess the kompressor model and 7 gtronic model is worlds apart.

But i guess the pricetag for C200 may generally be a deterring factor as i do not wish to load with such a high installment monthly even thou affordable. Haha a real headache.

If luxury and badge means nothing then just calculate depreciation and you will get your answer on value. But often man's mind don't work that way when come to car.

Question is: do you feel more blessed in ody or merc?

Actually currently with the high COE presently, for ody if i were to trade in i can fetch about 125k, comparing with purchase price generally cost about 8k for 17 months of drive. Interest over this eight months is generally not much perhaps less than 1k. Of course factoring out fuel cost, road tax and insurance. I can recover 25k after selling, plus 8k additional trade in for the ody to put onto the merc. I plan to top up additional 10 to 15 k more for downpayment as i do not wish to loan much, perhaps i more risk adverse i guess but then its just me. But this means i leap into the high coe cycle n need a break even cycle as compared to ody now if i were to be force to sell, i can have no outstanding to top up. Which is why i say logically i should retain the car but of course many unforeseen factor like coe trend and merc currently dishing out discounts, i m not sure if i should miss the opportunity.

Then go test drive it. Then go with your heart. As long as not over-stretching, Then you won't go wrong. Both cars are good in their rights I think.

Neutral Newbie

Just my 2 cents bro. Judging from the pros and cons of changing, the cheaper road tax, fuel consumption as well as the thought of owning a brand new bnb merc is indeed tempting. If you like the car upon test driving, your family members are also happy with the change and you do not require the additional space and 2 seats, I would say go for it.

Actually I am more keen on the C180 1.8 but no stock available till july. I wonder if the price tag will be something unimaginable when the new stocks come in in July.

3-4 months wait should worth it for C180. [;)]

Turbocharged

If it has nothing to do with the badge thing, I will keep the ody.. I think you subconsciously do consider the badge thing although you say you didn't....hehehe... [laugh]
