Mine when off engine at about 50km/h very hard to steer. Had to use my body weight to turn the steering. Not sure why. But my brakes were working though. lol.

Many of us are so used to power steering that we don't know that the steering can still be turned relatively easily as long as the wheel is still turning..

haha.. yeah last time i learned driving with a non power steering car [laugh] [laugh]

Yeah, both the Mercedes and the MPV in front of it almost kenna side swept by the bus. At that kind of speed, it would be a bad crash from the side - sure up lorry. Both drivers must go pray pray.

mer cee dee can go buy 4d big big leow.... close shave [laugh] [laugh]

I think the driver's mind only think abt siaming accidents, no time to think about killing the engine to effect engine brake..

Neutral Newbie

its hard to believe that brakes have failed . there are other ways to control other than to head straight on to incoming traffic

Crazy driver..almost took the life of an innocent pedestrian.

Lucky the pedestrian alert and young enough to run..Imagine if it was an older or disabled person [:(]

The only reason i can think of for the bus driver to do this is his brakes totally fail. No choice go to the lane with no cars and speed to high to turn right.

Before switching off the engine, maybe he must point the bus towards a safe spot (if there was one), so that he would not need to steer it anymore and just let the engine die and slow the bus to a stop.

Downside:- the engine is likely to be wrecked? Or the tail may swing due to rear wheels locked suddenly by the braking force of the engine!!,

Yes.. This is exactly what I wanted to say.

Everyone if ur brakes fail please don't juz switch off engine without thinking. Make sure the road in front is clear before u do it cos u got limited steering.

I think the driver is not familar with the bus.

All huge size vehicle sure have a button near the foot call Exhaust Brake! Even the brake is malfunction, driver should step on the exhaust brake, follow by hand brake.

The exhaust brake can use to shut engine also...

Lucky the pedestrian is not pushing stroller with baby inside...

But the driver also tried his best liao to maneuver a runaway bus. Amazing that he managed to make that tight filter to the other side. 50 yr unker got skills.

The TP probably know about it already. It is in the news. The bus had no brakes then lost control and hit another bus. Police already investigating.

The Bus Unker good driving skills la.. he even managed to horn the cars at the red light and perhaps to warn the lucky pedestrian too when he was barreling down the slope ..

And see the way he manoeuvre his big bus around the right turn and then turn left again towards oncoming traffic, he damn zai and good.

Think now if is brake failed, then whose fault? Or is act of God? Or the bus company will bear the responsibility for not maintaining the bus well? or the workshop didn't do good job when last servicing this bus?? I think least of all is the driver fault, and perhaps he should be commended for his good driving skills in averting even more tragedy if he did bang into all of the vehicles stopping at the traffic light..

[sweatdrop]

Why is there a need to switch off engine? We are not talking about stuck accelerator pedal or throttle out of control here. Even if that is the case, wouldn't putting the vehicle into neutral be better? You will still have power steering plus other stuff that depends upon the engine.

If it's just brake failure, will not being in gear but no throttle input slow the vehicle down quicker? There's such a thing called engine brake even for auto vehicles.
