Genes 6th Gear May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 i think even the civic is able to contain 3 average sized adults rear passengers quite easily. Of coz, FF sedan so no big middle bump for the drive shaft.. ↡ Advertisement
Billcoke 2nd Gear May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 (edited) I was toying with the idea of downsizing from an MPV to a large sedan. I have been looking around and have not really found a sedan suitable for 5 adults. It seems that they are always designed for 4 or 4.5. Anyone knows why? Look for those cars with FF drive, especially Jap or Korean cars. For FF drive, since there is no axle to drive the rear wheels, hence there is more leg room for the passenger sitting in the rear center seat. Even if you get the BMW 7 series, it is still a 4 seater, the center rear seat has very little leg room, and also the rear seats are bucket seats suitable for two passengers. Galantspeedz Turbocharged May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 Wider on the outside does not mean the interior will be wider also. The doors might be thicker or the arches are wider? That is why it is always good to test drive rather than decide based on all these figures. yes but first you have to do the groundwork. a 68 inch space will give you Max 68 inch but a 71 inch will give you anything from 60+ inch to 71 inch.. agree? it be dumb to look at cars that are 50+ to low 60+ inch in width right? Bobztoise 1st Gear May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 (edited) I think my Galaxy is nearly ideal for 3 in the middle row or 2+2+2.Many MPVs don't have a decent middle row for 3 actually, especially the Jap ones. Only those with individual seats are good for me - others are SMax, Sharan and Touran. Still I miss driving a sedan. Have you had a look at the C4 Grand Picasso or Peugeot 5008? Both have 7 individual seats and within your Audi A4 budget All seats isofix compatible plus no transmission tunnel I drove the 5008 for 8 months and must say it's a more than decent car Also, I assume brand is important to you? Because I think for the budget of A4, you can get a fairly decent Korean car The Almera is also cheaper yet more spacious Edited May 1, 2012 by Bobztoise

Chickenbackside 1st Gear May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 If comfort for 5 is top priority, no sedan will cut it. Sedans are made for 4 with an occasional 5th passenger traveling for short distances. I replaced my 7 seater with an exec sized sedan. Trust me, the space inside are in different leagues.

Honestly, I would get a Korean car over the Almera because I think it looks ugly on the outside. I actually like the i40/i45 for its looks but the price is too high for a Korean car thanks to the COE prices. I like the design of the A4 as well as the cockpit. And the 2nd-hand prices are dropping thanks to the new model out. Not sure if I will wait, but it's the car I like at the moment at a suitable budget. Strangely, I find no difference in the interior whether it is FF or F4 configuration (for Quattro). Edited May 1, 2012 by Grix17

It's why I feel I will be stuck with MPVs for space because car designers do not design cars specifically for 5, nor have such options. It appears that 4 is the ideal number, and 5, well, is just ODD. Why do we have the option of 7 or 8-seater MPVs, yet do not have the option for 4 or 5-seater sedans with slightly different seat design? I was complaining the other day about car designers not thinking out of the box. Only the Honda Edix is the only MPV/crossover that has evidence of thinking outside the box with their 2 rows of 3. Perhaps the reception wasn't good, so all designs have gone back to the usual conventions.

Once you have 3 kids sure get MPV already ma.
Datura 2nd Gear May 1, 2012 Share May 1, 2012 Hi Grix17, I remember you from our estima hybrid days. I tell you the kids all love MPV, big one, as they do enjoy the space. My kids are teenagers now and do not always go out with us. I have instead bought two SUV (Q5 for myself and Tiguan for wife) and they are best drive I ever had, if you really going for A4, go for the 2.0T quattrol, you will not regret it. That's a nice alternative .. my wife doesn't drive luckily or unluckily. But she always wants a big say in what car we get, and it seems like she has gotten used to cars of MPV/SUV height. She says the A4 is too low. Haha. Women .. I am keen on the A4 because it feels just nice. I would love to do that upgrade + downsize in 2-3 years' time. Maybe I will wait for the current 2012 model to go on the 2nd hand market

Actually i personally feel that whether it is a MPV or SUV, both also consider big. Tiguan seems to quite a nice SUV to drive, esp the latest version. Downside - parking difficulties and fuel consumption. If I want lots of boot space, I'd rather choose an estate like the A4 Avant.
Karu 6th Gear May 2, 2012 Share May 2, 2012 Even the big sedans are designed for 2 rear passengers only... LS460, the older Passat cc are the 2 cars with 2 rear seats & a larger arm rest/console right in the middle. Edix's middle seat is also not as wide as the 2 at the sides. Not comfy for the one in the middle.

Asure7 1st Gear May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 (edited) Actually, I'm not going so upmarket to S Class or 7 series. But I realise SUVs are equally narrow inside. Not sure about other SUVs. But CRV's rear seats are very spacious. I put 2 child-safety seats on left and right side. The middle seat is still wide enough to seat an adult. If remove the childsafety seats, confirm a lot of space for 3 avg sized adults. The flat floor (NO transmission tunnel) helps a lot. I actually took measuring tape to measure before buying lol. Tried Q5, tiguan (too small), tucson etc... RAV4... rear seats still not as spacious as crv. btw, edix rear seats not as wide as crv's :) Edited May 4, 2012 by Asure7
