A 33-year-old Chinese male driver has been arrested on suspicion of fleeing an accident scene where two 12-year-old boys were hit at a traffic light crossing.

The incident happened at 10.10am today in front of Blk 401 along Tampines Ave 7.

The two boys were conveyed by ambulance to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. One of them is suspected to have a fractured right arm and the other sustained multiple abrasions on his body.

Investigations revealed that the driver had stopped his car and brought the boys to the side of the road after the collision. He then drove off from the scene before ambulance or police arrived, and did not privde his particulars to the victims.

Two members of the public came forward to provide information on the case to the police. Three hours later, the driver was arrested at his residence in Tampines.

Further investigations revealed that the driver was in fact disqualified from driving. The man has been placed under arrest for five driving offences.

Motorists who are involved in accidents are reminded that they should never leave the accident scene, they must stop and render necessary assistance, such as calling an ambulance, said the Traffic Police.

Failure to do so is an offence and if convicted, the offender is liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months.

Acting Commander of Traffic Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Poh Lye Hin, commended the two public-spirited members of public who had promptly furnished vital information to the police and his officers leading to the arrest of the culprit.

He said: "Motorists must stop to render assistance when they are involved in accidents as this could make a difference between life and death."

Just to clarify. Is it an offence "NOT TO STOP" or "LEAVING" the scene of an accident?

I think not to stop.. in this case, he stopped and helped the 2 boys, then drive away..

Cannot be like dat lah. If like dat then the moment the driver jam brake and go to 0 km/h, then move off, will be no offence already.

Remember the actor's hit-and-run case? There was a discussion whether it is considered a hit-and-run because he did stop the car then drive off again..

A motorist serving a driving ban that is in force until August next year was yesterday charged with offences related to a hit-and-run accident in Tampines last Sunday.

Tong Chee Wei, 32, who is self-employed, is accused of having been behind the wheel of a car while serving a 11/2-year driving ban.

He is also said to have driven without insurance coverage.

A third charge accuses him of dangerous driving; he allegedly failed to stop at a red light and hit a pair of twins aged 12 at a pedestrian crossing at about 10am.

He was also charged with failing to stop after the accident and failing to render assistance.

One of the boys had abrasions on his face and limbs while the other dislocated an elbow and had abrasions on his hands and legs.
