i have an opportunity of going into the area of sales...as pre-sales consultant, also in IT

the salary is quite okay.. some but not huge increment.

i am in the middle management doing operations and client support with quite a bunch of people doing the dirty work for me

this one is an individual contributor.

pulling factors are the potential of raking more $$, as in the area of sales

the product is a new/upcoming and consider the 'in thing' now

push factor is the fact that being new,a lot has to be done/ironed out/fixed & fought. definitely more siong than current

also, i may fail in this role...then tio pok.. finding a job with matching pay at 40yr old can be daunting..

the question is.. would this switch be a downgrade and detrimental to my career?

is it worth the risk?

This alone will make me think twice or thrice before switching..

Maybe it's just me, but i value work-life balance more than anything. I rather choose lower pay but can enjoy off time with family and friends. [:)]

Just my $0.02

I'm not too sure what kind of sales or products you will be doing, maybe the questions below can help you. I got these questions from my friends when i asked them similar questions:

1 - Do you love making lots of money and willing to sacrifice your time for it?

2 - Are you very people orientated and have very good soft skills?

3 - Do you have real interest in the product you selling?

I find that sales line is very volatile. The products that you promoting is also very important. Is it an establish brand or some baria brand from China? How is the market share and who are your competitors? It may be good to do abit of study before jumping in.

Clinical answer.

However, TS is not sales background so he can't answer this.

But sales role pays well if done well.

I rarely see pre sales folks going into full accounts, most switch within the same industry. If I rem correctly, comp will not be fixed and based on variable 70/30 or thereabouts .

That said,u might be better off moving to a regional operations role rather than to presales.

actually, i know i am already at the upper band in my job.. a breakthrough will be real difficult.

in addition to true ability, got to lick many many balls and luck is also factor.

it doesn't help with so much FT that can do your job at half price.

it just happen that this presales opportunity came along.. they can match my current salary and this set me thinking...

career progression for tech presales is to eventually do full accounts and sales right? this is where the $$ is at..

You need to understand the kpi in your new sales role and ask yourself if you are confident in achieving it.

In sales, there is the fastest track to senior management roles.

Top sales results every mth will guaranteed you the $$$ and promotions so much faster than back-end.

No sales = Tio pok ( it's very result oriented) consider carefully.

Don't you agree that TS needs to have an inkling (at the very least) if he has a knack for sales before he jumps in (at his age)?

Your sales role pays well if done well statement is a very general common sense/no brainer statement.
