There is no summation or mathematical connotation in the question.

 

It's purely symbol/shapes arranged in a linear fashion.

So I think it means 1001005050.

The answer box is rectangular and longish, which I assumed the teacher is expecting the long numerical answer.

Didn't ask - my boy (clearly) doesn't go to MGS, so I'd feel paiseh asking. But I'm sure I'll encounter enough ambiguous questions in his own school's papers to raise soon enough.

That's an actual Pri 3 CA1 past year question from a branded Pri school. No options, so it's a free response question. What's your answer, and why?

 

I can think of three equally valid ways to do it (two obvious and one slightly less obvious), giving three different answers. In fact, none of these is truly correct since there's insufficient information to establish the implied metric, but whatever.

 

I wouldn't mind if challenging questions are set by those with a modicum of intelligence and judgement. But clearly, at least some of the question setters are falling short of the mark.

 

300 is the obvious one that people go for, but they forget... why would a symbolic number system with a square = 100, represent 300 with two squares and two triangles??

 

Obviously, 300 = 3 squares, so 300 is not the answer. The triangle must be representing some other number which is not equal to 50 (half a square)...

 

This kind of maths question is not really testing maths, but the kids' ability to think critically - though I think Primary 3 is a bit too young to start. End of the day, it's too tough for the majority of the kids.

 

Only the gifted ones would have a good chance of getting it right and benefiting from the intent of the question (i.e. to sharpen their thinking skills). The run-of-the-mill primary school kid would most probably be "blurred" and would actually benefit from more basic maths questions to build up basic math skills. These higher level thinking questions are way over head and wasting their time.

Nice try. But you should have a look at the Roman number system.

 

Example, X = 10, so they write 20 as XX!

 

It's not (X) x (X) = 100

 

30 is XXX !!

100+100+50+50 = 300, still quite easy but i maybe wrong.
