Yes, agree in general but Toyota/Honda do not have competitors in this space in Singapore.

Toyota Fortuner is smaller across the board, and on an older platform (though facelifted) and Honda CR-V is a class down.

The right comp is the Toyota Kluger/Highlander or Honda Pilot, both of which are not in Singapore.

If you have noit read the review by Chritopher Tan on this CX9 yesterday, please try to do it. Never see such a glowing article from him in a long while. Almost everything about the car is right. Will not be surprise if he get it to replace his current ride haha.

For me, the car ticks all the right boxes except for the access to the 3rd row where it lack a walk-thru isle in middle row, so very lecheh to have to shift the 2nd row seats. For people ferrying in comfort, Alphard/Vellfire is still the clear winner.

But good thing this is launched only now, else I would be having a headache deciding between this and my current ride.

I think after the CX-9 launch here, Mazda has almost covered all the segments in the market, except for big luxury car segment (unless there is a new Mazda 9).

I think the Mazda 5 needs a refresh.

Seriously.

I have not seen any SUVs having a walk thru isle to access the third row, it’s like saying HDB no good because it is not gated.

I only know Vans (mini, luxury or otherwise) having a walk-thru isle.

What make SUV so special that it cannot have the feature that many MPVs have already?

And it does not even have to be purposely built. I used to take out the centre seat of second row of my Touran to create a "isle". Can be done with any rides that have individually removable second row centre seat, mostly conti rides.

Btw I not trying to pick a fight with my posting. Just sharing my feedback. Relax.

It is not a question whether it can be done or not, but the question of why should it be done in the first place?

Everything can be done to space inside a vehicle. The Volvo XC90 Excellence has only 2 seats on the second row, yet Volvo does not make a walk thru isle.

Let’s just put it this way, SUVs are not positioned as people mover, that’s for MPVs to fulfill.

I am not trying to pick a fight too, just puzzled on that one point.

I think you are missing the point. Never say never to anything, something I have learnt first-hand many times over.

7-seater SUVs are getting popular now as many from MPV camp are being enticed by this new emerging trend as to what SUV can offer. So I would say if the car makers are listening and want to increase their customer base, this kind of walk-through isle would eventually be made available. Just my thinking.

Based on 3rd row legroom, Sorento is actually more spacious than either CX9 (despite the difference in external sizes) or Fortuner.

This was a key metric for me and I would rank mass market models as follows, from a 3rd row legroom perspective:-

- Sorento

- CX9

- Santa Fe/Fortuner

- Outlander

- X-trail

Hopefully there will be more choices later this year if Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008 comes to our shores.

I notice CX9 is priced at around 188K, this is not a so mass market price and is quite a lot more expensive then all the rest  being mentioned.

Cannot confuse price with value in SIngapore because of badge effects, AD margin and CEVs/VES distortions.

That said, the right comp set in Singapore for a 7 seater mid-sized SUV are (all around +/-10% of price in global markets of US, Australia, Canda) :-

CX-9

Sorento

Santa Fe

In the mid-sized space, Honda rep (Pilot), Toyota's rep (Kluger/Highlander) and Nissan's rep (Pathfinder) are all not sold in Singapore.

X-Trail, CR-V, Outlander are from a class down, from the compact SUV class.

CX-9 is a beautiful car, and I would probably go for this rather than a Discovery Sport.  Not sure if I would pay 30-40% more than a Sorento given the global prices, but to each his own in that regards.

hahahaha....yes agreed, space is smaller than some of its competitors, but then again, people who buy the CX5 have family members of 4 or less or they dun fetch more than 4 people at a time.

The CX5 is the smaller version of the CX9 with the turbo...haha

so much more expensive than a sorento diesel.

Looks great but too expensive bah.

I want to see them up-tune the 2.5L T and shove it into a Mazda 6 MPS..... [thumbsup]

so far, not heard anything of mazda plans to go turbo in any other of its range. Even in the USA. I feel they have been pretty stagnant on the development/updating front since 2017.

I like the cx-9 but own car in sg, have to be practical.

Ideally the sorento would have a petrol turbo so that no worries about govt doing funny things to diesel along the way again. But really VFM.
