Neutral Newbie

Just caught it yesterday in IMAX 3D... had been delaying cause wanted to get the bluray but was too bored. :D

I enjoyed the action packed scenes, ok with simple story, but character development quite 2 dimensional (much worse than pixar cartoons)

****Possible SPOILER below****

I still don't get why the humans will get hurt when the robot was hurt?

Why they need to move their legs, so mafan?

I also thought that the 2 person needed to control the robot is quite lame but it made the story more interesting.

At first I thought the Colonel (or whatever rank) was a pedo and was in love with the Japanese girl since she was young. [laugh]

To put it in the movies sense, the technology is based on a neural bridge to connect man to machine, combining man and machine into one, whatever movements the pilots do, the machine does.

The pain factor I guess is that since technology concerning nerve endings are used, whatever damage inflicted on the machine can be translated to the pilots themselves.

Two pilots because of the technology short coming, one man was too much to take the nervous stimuli, Need not say what happens if there's too much stimulus on the nervous system. So two pilots joined to share the load and make it less painful.

Sorry for not making myself clear. I already know all these as the movie have explained, but I just thought it's quite nonsense. It's like technology thought up by a 12yo kid. [laugh]

Today we have Xbox's kinect that could track our full body movements including fingers. In pacific rim, they built huge robots powerful enough to maneuver in water yet need to connect what nerve system to the robot...?

That aside, I still enjoyed it. BTW, the movie flopped in US box office.

Lol... Actually it's only a movie, don't need to be so logical. I akin to it more like star wars and transformers, sci-fi fantasy genre.

It's part of the plot device to make the movie more interesting. That's why we are discussing it.

This movie is weird, it's a flop in US but rotten tomatoes rate it 71% which is not bad, and it's an international box office smash...

The ratio of geeks worldwide is more than in US?

I like the VF-1 series from the original Macross, especiallsy the 1J. The Macross Frontier also got some seriously mean and sexy mecha.

The VF25s from frontier have a somewhat Russian look UN jet mode, like some advanced SU fighter...but robot mode not used the looks. The VF1 series still the best!

I just read this in IMDB forums. It is basically what I think but in more detail:

(not going to use MCF quotes cause it makes the long writing harder to read)

"This is one of the worst films I have seen in a while, the bad humans (politicians) are dumb, the good humans are stupid and the aliens's intelligence is beyond stupidity. Not only that, the movie is full of plot holes from start to the end; it never stopped.

First, let me tell you I'm a huge comic fan; I don't usually watch anime but I love Death Note and Evangelion. I know it's almost impossible to make a movie without a plot hole especially in the sci fiction/comics genres; Star Wars, Back to the Future and the Dark Knight have huge plot holes but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them, everything else is so awesome that I don't care about the hole at all and most of the time I forget about it. But this movie not only has plot holes, it contradicts itself; that is the worst thing a movie can do. Imagine in Terminator 2, just after Arnold said that the T-1000 can not transform into a weapon then in the next scene the T-1000 transform into a bazooka. Yes Ladies and Gentleman, this movie is that bad.

Finally yesterday I had the chance to see it and I was excited. Before the movie was realeased I watched a conference with Del Toro, someone asked if this movie was going to be a related/rip off of evangelion, then he replied "No, this has nothing to do with evangelion, this is about giant robots, it's a genre that the japanese have embrace way before evangelion, with godzilla, gundam wing, etc, etc". I thought that was excellent, finally someone was going to do something huge about giant robots, with excellent quality. Don't get me wrong, Evangelion is awesome but is not about giant robots.

Let's start with the good things. The Kaijus are great, the two main Jaegers are generic giant robots (giant spartans from halo) but the other two are awesome, the fights and the cgi effects are top notch. That's it, everything else sucked.

In the first minutes of the movie, they said that the Jaegers are so complex that they need two pilot to be controlled. One pilot controls left side of the machine and the other pilot the other half. I'm Ok with that but 10 minutes later in the first punch you see the two pilots were swinging the same arm. So yeah, the star of the movie is making a useless movement. I'm Ok with it, maybe he is being cocky; if you know what I mean. But NO, in the entire movie both pilots are always synchronize, and most of scenes you are actually watching the wrong pilot, it's like the movie knows it's wrong and wants to shine about it. This is a huge contradiction, the two pilots are pretty much pointless.

Also these machines are so complex that you need to do a brain link (not only one but two). I'm Ok with it, maybe these machines are really so complex that makes people bleed. Maybe eventually they will need to use a lot of weapons at the same time or do a lot of different things at the same time, hard core multitasking; although simple voice commands will be enough, but maybe in this world people doesn't have that technology. NO, GlaDos helps the pilots and the Jaegers don't do anything complex, they are generic simple human-shaped giant robots, they basically move the arms, legs and require some balance. These are the dumbest giant robot I have seen in my entire life.

Today we have the technology to make the robots follow our movements, this is no secret. There, check it here

The Chinese Jaeger has three arms, and guess what? It has three pilots; so yeah, the movie pretty much is throwing at your face that one brain controls one arm. It's so complex to control a robo arm that makes you bleed.

The good people in this movie is so dumb because they created non-sense machines. You know, the cars are really complex machines too, there are a lot of part moving at same time, they turn gasoline into energy. Ask the italians, to them is like making art. The movie is saying because is complex you need to link your brain, but do you link your brain to your car? I don't think so.

I will buy the idea if the robots were not human-shaped, like the Eva 05 (google it), or if they were mechanical. Actually in those cases the idea of several pilots will become reasonable. So yeah, the power ranger robots make more sense than these Jaegers. All The Giant Robots (except evangelion in the mainstream department) in the genre are like that and there is nothing wrong them. Why *beep* it up?

Let me tell you why Del Toro did the brain link, because He ripped it off from Evangelion. That's right, I'm saying it. Evangelion is the only story of the genre, in my knowledge, that does this. This is one the greatings things of Evangelion and is what makes it unique and special. This kind of stories are usually lame or simple, the good is the fights between the monsters and robots. Evangelion took the genre to the next level with the brain link. It added a new drama never seen before in this kind of stories, it's excellent. The difference is that in Evangelion the robot are angels, that's how the monsters are called. They are not actually robots, they look like robots but that's the armor that helps to control the beast inside. It makes more sense to do a brain link to an animal than a human-shaped machine. The Drama is top notch in Evangelion, only kids have the ability to control the Evas (name of the robots), because of their young brain, and not only that the kids needs to have a special relation with the robot, you usually don't change the pilots, only at extreme situations. There is a special bond with the pilots and evas, it's wonderful. As you can see the pilots are pretty much undisposibles and valuables but still they are kids, so they make a lot of mistakes and people die because of these. Sometimes a kid doesn't want to pilot the eva because bad things happens when they get into the evas (people died), but then who is going to save the world? The situation gets nasty. Not only that, because the Eva are not robots sometimes they don't respond to the pilot leaving pretty bad situations or in other occasions the Eva goes insane and is uncontrollable. If you like Pacific Rim and haven't seen Evangelion, what are you wanting for? You will realize this is a piece of crap.

As you can see, Del Toro did the brain link because he wanted the drama of Evangelion but he failed bad. The acting is pretty bad. No one can argue with me about this, the little child gave the best performance by far. Idris was ok but everyone else was bad, amateur actors with no emotions, nothings. With the brain link he created the cliche hero, greatest for the job but refuses to do it because something bad happen, and cliches go on. The scientist were the worst, so annoying, Newton (yeah, the name of the greatest physicist in the history of mankind) keeps yelling all the time, he was louder than the beasts. They were worst than the prometheus ones, al least in that movies they died first. The Plot makes no sense, it's for 5 year old kids.

The Wall, yeah I heard about many people complaing about it, but yeah is that bad. I know is a politician's idea and they want to make them look stupid but this is beyond. How about a bunker, fortress or at least put some weapons to protects the wall, if you wanna make them look bad put useless weapons but not a simple wall. Is this movies in the 7th century? I know the Great Wall of China back then was a good idea but this looks retarded. Here, Final Fantasy VII, is how you protect a city from giant monsters.

I know this movie is about giant Robots, as I said, make the weapons useless, like all the Godzilla movies.

The written is bad. The Sword is the prime example of cheap ass writing of this holes fest. The Jaegers was in a pretty bad situation, and how did it get out? with help of bad writing, it was cheap and definitively made the pilots look dumber. I was okey when the Jaeger was using a ship of billions of dollars as a bat against a giant beast in a world with a huge crisis, at least is trying to kill the beast and save lives and maybe some buildings. But why It didn't use the sword instead of the ship? Why didn't the Australian Jaegers use the two swords in the beginning of the fight at china and save the chinese and russian Jaegar? There is no question, Del Toro and Team were drunk when they were writing this crap. Also after that disaster, the Jaegers kept using the sword as the main weapon, and the Kaiju were nothing to it. A Kaiju was turn into a fish fillet and the super and overwhelming rank 5 Kaiju over 9,000 thousand was nothing to two swords.

The scientist said that only material with Kaijus DNA could go throughout. I'm ok with that, but how in the mother of !#@$ did the pilots get back? are the pilots alien? This is beyond dumbness. I won't go into details but yeah, what about the Jaegar handling the pressure in the abyss? Didn't the pilots should have died with the pressure without the proper treatment (pressure chambers)? Eight Helicopters can make a Jaeger Fly? There is no question, Del Toro knows nothing about simple physics.

There are so many flaws with this movie, I won't go with every single detail because I will be here forever. So finally I will talk about the aliens. It is impressive how these guys were like only 5 seconds in the screen but manage to be the dumbest of all.

The Aliens are a species older than the dinosaurs (65 million of years ago), they create/harvest the Kaiju, by cloning, and use them to conquer worlds around the universe. Also they are so advance that can create portals.

Why do they keep sending Kaijus one by one in like 20 years? Those are the stupidest tactics of conquering. These guys are Rita-Zedd brain level, actually they are worse. It's like in a war, instead of sending an army they send one tank and when it gets destroyed they send another, and another, and another. I'm telling you this is like the Power Rangers, but to the next level of stupidity. I understand one or two or maybe three monster so they can check out how things are; but really? 20 years or something like that? Napoleon should be ashamed of these guys. I know the focus of this movie is the monster vs robots, but come on, they can do better than that, why do you need stupid aliens? Final Fantasy VII, has a great backstory about giant Monsters attacking the Humans without aliens.

Finally, Here it comes "the dumbest thing I have heard in a sci fiction movie". Are you ready? Do you know what is it? .. .. .. It's the Baby!!! The Aliens are cloning the Kaiju, ok? so what is the first thing you need to do when you are cloning a species? Birth Control!!! Come on Del Toro, this is basic stuff in sci fiction. Have you seen Jurassic Park? They were cloning the dinosaurs, and what did they do? All the dinosaurs were female. Have you seen Star Wars? the clone wars? Yeah in the clone army all are male. Besides if you are cloning an species you don't want babies, they will *beep* all the genetics of the process. Still if you accidentally have babies you should care about them, How about use them and make you army bigger? These aliens apparently don't give a *beep* about the babies since Hellboy made it clear it is not the first time. Apparently they have thousands of Kaijus that they don't care about the babies but still they sent to earth Kaijus one by one.

Wait a minute, what was the purpose of the baby? The Humans needed a fresh brain but the Kaiju's brain were always destroyed in the fights, so they invented the baby. Okey, Let me get this straight, the movie is telling me that humans are going to get information of a unborn baby and the info is that only things with Kaiju's DNA can go through the portal. This is heavy *beep* This movies is going beyond stupid, there is no words that can describe their stupidness. Let me put you this on human levels. Imagine a sci fiction movie where you can get into brain, there is a serial killer pregnant mother that is hiding someone (basic stuff). The police somehow finds her but in the process of the capture she dies. What do the police do? They found the location of person from the unborn child. This is dumb, even for a sci fiction. On Earth, there is no species that can inherit knowledge, no insects, no reptiles, no mammals, nothing. From all the movies, comics, games I have somehow interacted with I have never seen a species that can inherits knowledge. This is heavy stuff, this will make the species better than immortals. I won't go into the details of this implication because I will be here forever, but yeah there is no way that dumb alien species, older than the dinosaurs, can do that.

Oh Yeah, did you notice, the baby was from the fat Kaiju but it looked like the one that died in space. What is the meaning of this? I don't wanna go deeper anymore. Seriously, this is one of the dumbest movies I have seen, and this is my problem. It was made by Guillermo Del Toro, if it was made by Michael Bay, or other douche bag I will not be complaining because I know they don't use their brain and they only do popcorn entertainment, nothing more. But Guillermo Del Toro, come on, this guy thinks and knows how to make you think. Have you seen the pan's labyrinth? It is great, it makes you wonder if the pan is real or not, it gives you clues but then you are not so sure. These movies is the total opposite, it doesn't want you to think.

I'm really disappointed that people is calling this the best movie of the year. I watched Man of Steel, yes it has flaws, is far beyond perfect, to me is the best Superman movie but is not the best Superman, but at least is a movie. Pacific Rim is a disaster, from beginning to the end. It's worse than the Power Ranger Movies, and the main problem is that is not focus for 5 year old kids like the Power Ranger Movie was.:

Personally, I think this movie is meant to be enjoyed as a no brainer giant vs giant slugfest in CGI. Over analyzing it will just spoil everything.

If we want to analyze, the entire idea of giant monster vs giant robots is ludicrous.

How come no one ask how it is possible for iron man's armour to fly to him in seperate pieces from 100s of miles away? [laugh]

There are 2 sizes of figures.

The smaller ~6" ones are already out. This series has Gipsy, Crimson and a Kaiju. Maybe more will come in future.

The bigger 18" will not release until late August. Only has Gipsy so far.

I usually buy online from places like HLJ.

Local toy shops I am a bit out of touch. You can try asking at those at China Square Central or Plaza Sing
