Rabbit for Adoption

This thread reminded me of a rabbit rescue 6 yrs ago...

Was waiting in the car for my wife in the morning (both going to work) and saw a cat chasing another cat. They went round and round the grass patch and when I took a closer look...it was actually a rabbit that the cat was pursuing.

Quickly alighted from my car and went for the rabbit. I believe it was domesticated and abandoned because it just sat there when I approached it, i.e., comfy with human appraoch. The cat ran away after sighting me.

Took the rabbit back home and prepared rabbit food like pellets, hay and water for it and condoned off the area with assembled metal gates as I have a dog at home. Incidentally, I also have a bunny (Holland Lop) but unfortunately, they didn't get along. The rabbiit looked like the one TS posted...very scrawny.

Anywayz, my wife and I were late for work and after I dropped her and was driving to my orpit, my 3 month old car got back ended by an MPV...Sigh !!

Anyhow, I called up the House Rabbit Society and they gracefully took in the poor bunny.

The white doggy in ur pictures also very cute. Looks very naughty. [laugh]

Yea he is. Hyperactive full of energy.

But at the same time very manja. If you put him on your lap on his back, he will not want to get up.

how about stackable cages? i have seen some in pet shops though not sure if they are for rabbit purposes?

I have an ex colleague whose rabbit runs freely at home whole day and will greet him at the door daily when he comes home from work. I read that rabbits typically like to chew on exposed wiring so not sure how he managed to keep that under control.

Chinchilla mostly. Jumping off edges, they know how high is too high, but holes within a surface, they're klutses. They can fall and hurt themselves.

Mine run free around my room most of the time, but they do like to cuddle up together in the cage to sleep together on warmer nights, and when cooler, they'll sleep next to my pillow (unless i'm really tired and snore loudly then i'll find them in the cage the next morning [laugh] ).

I have zero exposed wires in my room. They think the wires are vines/roots and try and clear them. They also used to attack the stickers on the wheels of my bicycles, so I removed the stickers of the lower one and things have been good.

I adopted 3 abandoned rabbits more than 8 years ago, a mother with her 2 children. 2 have since pass on and left with the last one...

During this period, wifey and i seldom go on long vacation together because they are not used to not having us around.

Was thinking of taking many vacations together after the last one left us before considering another pet again because it gave us much fun. [laugh]

So your rabbit needs a new companion? :D

Seriously I was considering about that just now but if this is a young rabbit, that would mean another 8 to 10 years of commitment.

Another concern is whether they would be able to get along well. My rabbit is housed in a 6 pcs playpen and I do have another space at home to house him separately if they can't get along. [:(]

Adrian is pretty much spot on. I let my two run about my room all day (been rabbit proofed). They're fairly toilet trained. Only pee in the litter. Poop is 90% in the litter, 10% to mark territory (i.e near my feet at my desk LOL), but its dry pellets which are unoffensive and can be swept up easily. I now use a cage without a tray so I sweep up daily. I usually put a little bit more litter over their pee spots daily, and change all of it every 3 days.

Food wise it's rabbit pellets + a tablespoon of oats twice a day, plus I top up hay as needed. Sometimes once a day, sometimes once every 1.5 days. Occasionally I give treats. Mostly to train them though (yes you can get them to come over like dogs). One of mine doesn't like fresh veggies, the other gets soft poop if she eats too much so i go easy with that. Usually, herbs, wheatgrass, or spinach. A slice of apple or pear is good too.

I'm quite hands on with them so they're both very affectionate. One likes me to lie next to her and stroke her, the other like me to carry her and will nudge me for that.

If you're getting the rabbit, do read up about their behaviour though. Some like to nip, but thats their way of showing affection. If you're not used to it, it can be shocking but not painful. Also do let me know if you want my old cage. It has a slatted plastic floor and tray so it will be better at the start until your rabbit becomes toilet trained.

rabbit proof... that's another thing i have to look into... I have wires around, especially my computer area. may be hazardous for the rabbit. I would rather give it the freedom to roam around the house then being caged in.

Not sure if this will work to help you save some space in the future in terms of stackable cages. they are pretty big unless your rabbits are the bigger sized varieties.

You may want to consider a room if any have some space. Far easier to rabbit proof than the whole house. Alternatively have a large "playpen" around the cage for the rabbit to run about when you're out. They're most active in the mornings and evenings. They're usually resting during the day and at night.
