Buying car in Singapore is all about depreciation. Whether savings upfront through CEVs or higher parf value at scrap, ultimately for buyer the depreciation decides the value of the vehicle.

Diesel is here to stay no matter how "environmental" concern everyone have. Our goods and services, transportation require diesel. Not because its environmentally friendly, but because its cheap. When it comes to doing business, controlling cost is as good as having better margin.

Already, people are complaining the cost of living is high; taxi are feeling the heat from the competition etc. Government don't need to remove diesel from the equation to make it worst. Politically, they just need to make their move to show that SG is concern with pollution and be inline with the world.

I owned both diesel and petrol cars. No matter how I try, my diesel constantly give me better mileage. Torque is good too. The $0.1 increase in pump price is offset by $100 off special tax so I don't really see a problem. Bearing in mind petrol is almost $1 more then diesel, so why not diesel?

Frankly, I know this day will come when the number of passenger diesel car size increase before I brought my diesel car. But I also know its difficult for government to surge on diesel price without impacting the economy, without repercussion. So yes. I still glad i brought diesel. :)

Today 10c

Next year 20c

3 yr 30c

Govt won't so good kangtao one

I got $15K CEVs rebate last month for my diesel car. So buying price is cheaper. Next year probably, there will be a surcharge instead, so the selling price of a diesel car, assuming people will still buy, will be higher. Second hand value also goes up in tandem, and hence we. who got a savings with rebates, will earn big big if value goes up.

Diesel car huat ah!!!!

Fully agree with you.

In a matter of time, diesel might cost almost the same as petrol.

Pity the commercial vehicles running on diesel. They would likely pass on the cost to consumers

So diesel tax could mean the end of those "industrial" diesel pump ?

Since there was no tax before, they might have closed one eye, but now with the tax, they are probably going to clampdown hard, since they would be "evading" tax.

Today 's papers reported that the objective of the 10 cents diesel tax is to curb usage.

Private diesel cars already have additional diesel tax factored on their road tax.

Taxis, buses and commercial vehicles need to run on diesel to run their businesses , obviously. Curb what usage? Might as well the whole Country come to a standstill. Lame excuse to generate revenue.

There are cleaner alternatives.

Ironically, CNG is one of them.

Many cities use CNG or electricity for their buses.

Our taxis are moving away from diesel, so the sky is not falling down.. it just got a little more grey..

Bro, u assuming petrol tax remain stagnant n onli diesel tax go up? As long as we drive, we're all easy prey for tax revenue.

At the end of the day, diesel is still $1 per litre cheaper than petrol. Wahaha.

Some transport companies said they can only adsorb the cost increase for 1 year. After that they might be looking at 20 to 30% increase in cost to customers. Good luck to all.

however long u drive, the additional diesel tax is constant,

but now with the diesel fuel tax, the more u drive the more u pay, thus "curb usage"

u dunno they give road tax rebate for businesses?

want to attack them oso must use better arguments mah.

Most diesel cars are at the entry level so comparatively, similar petrol cars all can and most do use 95 octane. so difference is now only around 60 cents.

Agreed.

But although it's only 60c cheaper, each litre of diesel gives higher mileage compared to petrol.

Therefore the savings is more than 60c per litre.

Those CNG stations sell diesel at more than $1 cheaper than petrol. So there are still lot more savings if you buy diesel from them.

Small vehicle can do without diesel, but can you imagine big trucks, buses, lorries, ships and even tanks running on petrol engine ?

They would need very big petrol guzzling engines just to start and move off.
