Pupils of a primary school in Sengkang chain their bicycles to railings as they are not allowed to park them in the school. Such attitudes need to change so people are encouraged to use bicycles for transport.

More than 500 cities in the world have bicycle-sharing schemes. Singapore is not among them.
Although the Government announced bold plans last month to build a staggering 700km of cycling paths by 2030 - the equivalent of cycling from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and back - that alone will not make Singapore a cycling city.
We have fallen behind other cities that actively promote cycling as a mode of transport. There are various reasons why we should pedal hard to catch up.
Cycling is a green option that can be an efficient people-mover for transport planners.

Here too hot to cycle.

Most people rather take car, take mrt.

Building any bicycle tracks would benefit mostly the prcs and banglas.

And with their increasing numbers, even the spandex cyclists would be ousted.

No go.

Lead by example lor. When senior chenghoo langs can start using bicycles, the ppl will feel less no face to cycle. If ministers, sperm-secs etc set the example, it will then be easier to promote cycling.

Other cities have hot summers, cold winters yet they still have share-a-bike scheme in addition to a large cycling population. Technically speaking bicycles can be easily fitted with a overhead shield against direct hot noon sun.

Even thought they have hot summer, but mostly low humility. So will not sweat even at 35deg

agreed on this..the humidity(humidex rating) is the main factor influencing many people's decision..and another important factor which many people who lives in Sinkapor ignores is UV index..which is harmful to skin and eyes

crazy har...u know how much the government gonna lose if most of us cycle.....rd tax...petrol tax...erp...carpark charges....coe and not to mention the taxes incurred when the car just rolls into our soil. The taxes for having the privilege of owning and using a car can drive the economy of a small country.

ya they are good at that...wont be surprise if they start putting erp for bicycle when too many are cycling....they will gibe reasoning like too many bikes on the road making cycling speed drop to a crawl....then they will increase mrt/bus fare saying our transportation will be made world crass. They really can one!

Need to take into account the cost of building and maintaining roads. New expressways are around S$1bn/km. And then you have the maintenance of the roads. And then the cost of jams to business. And so on. So need to consider why such revenue collection.

Agree that our climate is hot n humid and I am always sweaty n sticky staying out door. Maybe simple gadgets like bicycle fan, built-in foldable light weight sun shield/shade etc can be fitted to reduce such discomfort!? Our 'extreme' climate may need such inexpensive solutions.

Aiya, most if not all cities also need to build n maintain their roads. But they dont charge COEs, ARF, ERP etc to raise money to do it! Edited by Maseratigood

If everyone ride bicycle, no one take bus n mrt, cannot le later smrt lose money

Wrong liao! MRT can also have carriages for bicycles!!! And maybe charge the person extra 10 or 20 cents!

One mini-star had said : 'we have First Class World Transport system" and so why should we need bicycles ... [sweatdrop]

Our bicycles are connected to most parks and not to CBD and your office .... [grin]
