With the new school term starting Thursday, the Traffic Police will impose stiffer penalties on errant motorists who have been caught committing traffic offences within school zones.
The revised penalties will take effect from 1 January.
Seven demerit points will be given for careless driving, instead of 6.
For inconsiderate driving, the demerit points given will be 10, up from 9.
For failure to conform to traffic light signal, errant motorists will be given 13 demerit points, instead of 12.
The demerit points given for speeding will range between 5 and 24, instead of 4 and 24.
The maximum number of demerit points is capped at 24 points. The suspension of driving licence will take place after a motorist has accumulated 24 or more demerit points within 24 months.
The Traffic Police said the introduction of stiffer penalties is aimed at deterring motorists from committing traffic violations that can endanger the lives of vulnerable road users like young children and students, who use the roads within the vicinity of the schools.
Principals of all primary schools and special schools located within school zones have been informed of this new enforcement initiative.
The Traffic Police will be working with schools to disseminate related information and advisory to parents and guardians of students when schools reopen in January 2014.

1. 100 school kids arriving in 100 different cars vs the same arriving in say 8 mini school buses, which arrangement will cause more road congestions??

A minibus carries about 12 kids or so will not need to pick up the first one from home too early in the morning than a bigger bus carrying 30 kids, so the concern of such too early pick up time doesn't exist as reason for parents to send the kids to school.

2. So called parents n kid spending quality time in their car before reaching the school is still a myth ---- more likely the kid is sleeping in the car.

3. It seems such princesses, princes are more common in some elite schools. Anyone's observations indicate otherwise?

LTA is promoting cycling. Since there is no demerit point for bicycle, we should take advantage of cycling.

You may use tricycle or electric bicycle as long as no number plate.

Parking also free

Here's a scenario which I think contributes to the traffic condition.

The car stops along the road outside the school's gate.

The mummy comes out of the car.

The mummy opens the door for the kid.

The mummy helps the kid with the backpack school bag.

The mummy gives the kid a good bye kiss on the cheek.

The mummy gives final instructions to the kid.

The mummy see the kids goes off and wave to the kid.

The mummy gets into the car.

The car drives off.

Actually the steps you mentioned by right shouldn't take more than 1 minute. Troubles start when too many parents arrive at the same time in their cars when there's no proper / adequate drop-off bay to avoid clogging up the other traffic on the road. These are all man-made congestions inducing daily occurences.

I'm thinking is this helping if there's little or no enforcement? Sgp has so many schools, so little TP, even with cameras monitoring you will need a warrior behind the monitor.

I think prevention measures are better dan these penalties as penalties are for accidents that had already occurred. What we really want is prevention.

[thumbsup] Too bad a lot of parents pamper the kids too much.. If kindergarden that age, ya la, I agree need to send them to school. But by the time 12 years old, don't know how to walk meh? Haiz, I'm just thankful I don't travel by Dunearn / Bukit Timah area in the morning..

Probably 5 seconds.. Still will jam if many lidat, but should be shorter jam. Anyway, should do the zigzag line on those roads and station TP there. Stop there, FINE FINE FINE!!

Talking about zigzag line my MIL place nearby primary school does have a single zigzag line outside the school. Signs saying no parking but does that work? It's a single lane dual carriageway with a single continuous white line as a divider. Does it work? Like I mentioned, with no enforcement this road markings are typically useless. What they should do is convert the white line to a broad width concrete slab, anytime a car is parked there it will block traffic from its back forcing it to quickly move the car away or in heavy traffic conditions prevents any car from stopping.
