Kb27 Supersonic July 17, 2015 Share July 17, 2015 If the water inside the radiator becomes brown colour, can I still drive the car? Corrosion...get your coolant flushed and replaced asap. You can still drive, but the anti-corrosion property of coolant is not working anymore.

Kb27 Supersonic July 17, 2015 Share July 17, 2015 (edited) What will happen when anti-corrosion property of coolant is not working anymore? Any metal parts that the coolant flow by will be rusted and then corroded. Example, water pump has fan blades, if they are made of metal, they will start to corroded, bits and pieces will come off and join the coolant flow. A new and effective coolant is also alkaline. It prevents corrosion. When it becomes acidic, corrosion increases. That's why you need to replace coolant before they become acidic and then galvanic corrosion starts to occur. It will eat anything metallic, including the radiator. Edited July 17, 2015 by Kb27

Watwheels Supersonic July 17, 2015 Share July 17, 2015 If the water inside the radiator becomes brown colour, can I still drive the car? The brown colour is it engine oil? If engine oil is leaking into your coolant and coolant leaking into your engine...means you have to replace the head gasket. Do you see white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe when the engine is running? If yes, it's time to replace the head gasket. Better don't drive lah. Do you really want to stall in the middle of the road? Pls do not cause traffic jam during peak hour.

Yeobh 4th Gear July 18, 2015 Share July 18, 2015 At least can drive to the workshop. The brown colour looks like rust?! The brown colour are definelty minute rust and when in circulation with the cooling water they will act as abrasives to wear down the pipes and other cooling system components. I reckon there is no oil leakage as a forumer is suggesting. If there is oil leakage the coolant will be milky in colour and you can see the oil stain on the coolant surface. Frankly at this stage the next you will witness is radiator tube leakage and water pump failure. U need to bless your lucky star if the engine don't overheat.

Adrianli Hypersonic August 12, 2015 Share August 12, 2015 what is the life span of a radiator? Dont think there is an expiry date on the radiator. It is made of metal alloy, should withstand the test of time. But if it were hit by stones or rocks, or excessive vibration, or wrong coolant used, then it will never last long. Adrianli Hypersonic August 12, 2015 Share August 12, 2015 by the way, do you guys use tap water as coolant? Not advisable cos lots of minerals in tap water. Best to use distilled water/battery water. But if in an emergeny, just use tap water first. Then when reach workshop, just flush it through.
