LTA meets four dealers over motorcycle COE price spikes

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has called up four major motorcycle dealers for separate meetings over the recent spikes in motorcycle certificate of entitlement (COE) prices.

The Straits Times understands that the dealers are one authorised agent and three parallel importers.

The LTA would not reveal more, although industry players said the four could be suspected of speculative trading of COEs.

In response to queries, an LTA spokesman merely said: "LTA is meeting some of the major motorcycle dealers to better understand the recent trends in COE prices and motorcycle purchases."

Motorcycle COE prices have been rising from below $2,000 in 2013 to breach $6,000 in 2015. In the past year or so, it has been hovering around $6,500.

In February, the Government imposed additional taxes on higher- end motorcycles in the hopes of dampening big-bike demand - which was seen as one of the causes for soaring motorcycle COE prices.

But instead of falling, premiums shot up further, ending at $7,483 in the first bidding of March, and $8,081 in the second.

Experts have said the higher taxes do not dampen demand, but merely shift demand for high-end bikes to less expensive models. Others said the transferability of motorcycle COEs gives rise to a degree of speculation, which leads to price rises.

Dr Walter Theseira, an economist and senior lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), said: "This situation highlights a basic problem with the motor market - the excessive power that dealers, both motorcycle and car, hold in a small industry where large players account for a huge fraction of the market, and where supply is limited by policy.

"Policymakers do not have enough power or mandate to look more seriously at how to curb their market power."

Another reason for the premium spikes could be corporate demand. The increasing popularity of food delivery services could mean companies are expanding their fleets, said SUSS transport researcher Park Byung Joon.

"This disruption is similar to how car COEs were affected by demand from private-hire car fleets," he said.

However, while Foodpanda's fleet increased from 2,500 at the end of last year to 3,000 currently, the majority of its riders use their own motorcycles, said a spokesman for the food delivery service.

Mr Rex Tan, a spokesman for motorcycle rental firm Ban Hock Hin, said that while his company does supply motorcycles to corporate clients, it does " progressive bidding" over two to three months "so as not to affect prices".

Motorcyclist Keith Tay, 52, suggested that to remove the influence of corporate demand, commercial motorcycle COEs be moved to another category, similar to how taxis were removed from the quota for Category A cars in 2012.

This could help keep prices down, said the real estate agent. "Now, motorcycles are too expensive for the normal rider," he said.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Motorcycle Trade Association said it is concerned that the LTA might modify policies based on the feedback "of a select few".

"It is strange that they did not engage the association," said an association committee member.

"We hope that they won't take what the selected dealers said as a consensus."

Supersonic

No one mention some motorcyclists removed themselves from the road permanently, by the way they ride.

And free up some COEs.

there's no loan restriction to bikes, u can even get 99% loan for 10 years when u buy a bike. Most are in house loans with high interest. For a few K different in COE prices, the eventual impact to the monthly loan payment would not make someone decide to not buy a bike. So what do you think dealers would do when bidding for COE?

Yesterday a lady on a Hayabusa got into an accident in Mersing.....she was the rider and passed on in the hospital. The deceased passport which was inadvertantly taken to make a police report but was needed in the hospital for immediate care.....so guys remember keep the victim passport close in an accident overseas.

To the deceased, From God we came and to God we will return as promised!

Is it me, or the new Goldwing looks smaller? [confused]

You are absolutely right brother......narrower, shorter, smaller petrol tank and less luggage space too (unfortunately)

But with improved technology, fuel efficiency, aerodynamics, comfort, safety and specs....

Rear design/exhaust seems nicer, but some goldwingers already prefer the outgoing side profile....

https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/news/2017/october/2018-honda-gold-wing-confirmed

The confirmed dimensions of the bike match the leaked info in our earlier story. The Gold Wing Tour is a fraction smaller than the old model, at 2575mm long, while the Gold Wing with no top box is shorter still at 2475mm. Width is 925mm, shrinking to 905mm for the DCT version thanks to the loss of a clutch lever.

http://driving.ca/honda/auto-news/news/first-look-2018-honda-gold-wing

The first thing that you notice is how outwardly smaller the 2018s are compared with the outgoing 2017s. The fairing, a bulbous affair on the previous model, is decidedly more svelte, the entire motorcycle is shorter and, indeed, the overall impression is of a 9/10ths scale Gold Wing, the shape familiar, but the dimensions dramatically reduced.

But the most incredible news comes when Savino notes that the 2018 model is more than 36 kilograms lighter than the previous generation. That’s an impressive statistic all by itself, but try this on for context. The mid-level Gold Wing Tour with the high-tech DCT Transmission weighs 379 kilograms: By comparison, Yamaha’s new Star VentureTC breaks the scale at a whopping 438 kilos. In Imperial terms the difference is even more impressive — the new Wing weighs a whopping 140 pounds less than Yamaha’s new super tourer. Yes, the Gold Wing with its six-cylinder water-cooled engine is some 140 pounds lighter than its twin-cylinder, air-cooled competition. Incredible!

This is really nice, but don't think I can handle it.

Been riding for 30 years, suddenly the interest on riding is sparked again. Just bought a 2nd hand Harley while still keeping my the other 2. My Honda Africa is reliable and much easier to ride than the Harley.

But Harley gives you a lot of satisfaction on the highway, the Arkrapovic sound especially.

Ride save to all riders.

i love the brutale and z800.....may just take my class 2 this december and get the z800.....brutale too expensive.

I like the new Brutale 800 (non RR) too, but I am a slow rider, won't be able to unleash the full potential of the bike.

Turbocharged

the one you posted is a Brutale Dragster, I prefer the more 'conventional' looking non-Dragster 2017 Brutale. Longer tail and has a see through hole under the seat.

too many bikes, too little money and no place to park...
