The Singapore F1 is just a vanity project to showcase CBD "Christmas-Tree" buildings. We can call it a street circuit or whatever, but where is the "race" in a procession more orderly than a Toyota factory?

My view is that the CEO and board of directors of Singapore Pte Ltd ("SPL") are extremely eager to continue this circus, as evidenced by the CNA reporting of dwindling spectators in the midst of contract negotiation with the new F1 owners. But after shelling out 6bn to buy over F1 from Bernie, I strongly suspect we will be ransomed to pay a higher fee for the next 5 years. As a shareholder of SPL, I can only swallow whatever they shove in and pray that they are gentle.

I also support building a dedicated race track like Sepang, but having it at Changi or Tuas will defeat the purpose of this vanity project by the SPL senior management. They prefer building the street track and dismantling every year around the CBD so that we look good in the camera. Very typical wayang mindset.

If ours is also a track like Sepang, we will have to compete with them to be able to organise a race. We need to be unique for F1 to stopover here.

There are just too many venues for F1 and their calendar year is getting longer and longer. Off-season getting shorter and shorter. Therefore off-season testing and development has to be shifted to in-season. As we speak right now, they are already developing next year or next next year car. The teams will prefer lesser venues.

Therefore if we are same as Sepang, might as well not compete here.

To build a F1 standard track needs a lot of money to build and upkeep. Each race, need to re-surface the track. Then there is also the other infrastructure to build too.

it's impossible for spore to build a race circuit

just use sepang circuit as an example

in order to build a 5.5km circuit, how big is the land size to cover the race track, land scape, twist and turn, spectator viewing area, pit building, etc

the land require to build a circuit is extremely prohibitive

besides, spore f1 is necessary on the street to showcase the nightview of spore ... if the circuit is hiden in a corner in tuas ... no point! lol

This. 100 percent this.

Except my response is : dump Singapore!!

Already the calendar is over full to the detriment of testing and development. Merc has become unbeatable to the point of tedium. I say dump the street circuits and the more boring (less pass-friendly) tracks.

That would include Monaco, but I don't think they'll ever get rid of that because, you know, "HISTORY, MAN!!".

But SG has no real international motorsport history to speak off. It lifts right out. Dump it, save our tax dollars and keep the good venues with the races spaced further apart.

It would be best if we didn't even bid for 2018 onward, but knowing our gahmen, I can't expect that level of sense.

I agree - dump Singapore!

I watch the F1 not for the country but for the racing. If I want to know more about Singapore, I would have watched Lonely Planet, Anthony Bourdain or BBC Discovery. The concert wasn't great too.

if the CEO of SPL want to "maintain" the existence of a tiny red dot in the world map using sport

F1 is debatable as their viewership is dropping like shit ... the "racing" has become so boring and the dominance from Redbull (4 years) and Merc (3 years) has made it worse ... even F1 is in crisis to maintain their viewership and fans

perhaps, the CEO of SPL could consider other sport ... [:)]

That's a very good point bro.  [thumbsup]  I just googled and noted that F1 viewership has dropped from 600m to 400m over a period of 8 years.

I'm not sure exactly why we are spending so much money and effort building and dismantling the "race track" and "grand stands" every year around town. After all, the novelty factor of those "Christmas tree" buildings will wear off after 1-2 years. Who wants to sit there and watch laps upon laps of the same view? Who watch the same porn year-after-year?

Are we after the tourism money or investment money via the F1? Do we visit or invest in Japan simply because they produce the best JAV?

I support D.S. The jewel has lost it's shine.

10 years are enough to showcase THE Red dot to a generation around the world. Tourism dollar not lucrative enough to keep it going.

Dedicated track, which will be deemed as just another track, is definitely a no go since CC, airbase also have to make way...

To promote the lion city we need more successful entrepreneurs and Schooling...

Every unkind word I've ever said about our gahmen giving elites and FTs (and especially elite FTs) special treatment? I take it back! :D

This guy is the elitest of FTs and this happened after the highest profile event this year. And they still made him pay and detained him. Kudos.

Man, I'm credulous. I took it seriously since it wasn't a local rag.

Ok, everything I thought and said before still stands. :D

I first saw the news on this when it was reposted by BBC Sport [laugh] Original link was in Spanish.

rosberg dropped to 17 ... now it's chance to see how aggressive and good he is

whether he can overtake like hamilton when he started from last row
