Another bites the dust at Man charged with taking aerial photos of Mindef Gombak Base after illegally flying drone above the area

Quote

Neo Wei Ren, a Singaporean, faces 16 charges under the Air Navigation Act.*

These include:

Four counts of using his DJI Mavic Pro drone to perform prohibited photography over the Ministry of Defence’s Gombak Base in Bukit Batok
*
Five counts of flying the drone over a protected area
*
Seven counts of not obtaining a Class 2 activity permit to operate the drone for a recreational purpose
In a statement on Monday, the police said that on Oct 13 last year, someone had reported seeing Neo’s drone flying in the immediate vicinity of the Gombak Base.

According to court documents, Neo allegedly operated the drone from a landed house along Cashew Crescent a total of seven times between May and October last year, all times without the necessary permits.

Separately, 66-year-old Lee Soon Tee was also charged on Tuesday for flying his drone illegally.*

He allegedly did so within five kilometres of the Paya Lebar Airbase at an open field along Tampines Industrial Avenue 2.

Lee’s drone was recovered from the roof of the Tampines Wafer Substation on Sept 23 last year.*

He faces one charge of similarly operating his “Emotion Mavic Drone DJ Pro” without a Class 2 activity permit.

I am interested to take up drone videoing, any experienced droners here can teach?

Most of us are self-taught. Get a drone and practice. If you have questions which drones to get, the easiest to start off and will last long through your interest with good resale value are DJI drones. Depending on how deep of your pocket and how much video quality you want.

Neutral Newbie

Guys do you have any solutions to drone batteries? All the drone batteries seem to be placed in unique casings making it hard to replace. Especially if they aren't popular brands.

Either change the connectors or open it and solder new wires and connectors. Easy DIY. Refer to youtube videos.

Flywhere seems to be a bit more restrictive than OneMap (which I would think is more 'official').

For example, according to OneMap looks like it is ok to fly at MacRitchie, but according to Flywhere that is a No-Flying NPark.

All those in green (nature reserves, parks, reservoirs) cannot also....  so restrictive until no point buying one!

Generic question: Is poor range considered normal for most places in Singapore?

My first foray into drones when I just got a Mavic Mini in Feb. So far I've only flown twice, once in a neighbourhood park (in the middle of a landed estate), and once at Henderson Waves bridge. Both before CB.

I was playing with one of the pre-programmed 'Quick Shot' mode called 'Rocket' - which is basically flying straight up vertically - and so far it never reaches the max altitude (60m iirc) before losing signal.

Horizontal range at Henderson was decent, though the signal gets wonky as the drone gets further away. Horizontal range at the neighbourhood park was definitely worse - too many trees?

I posit that the generally poor range is due to the highly urbanised environment - many buildings and radio-wave signals. Or could it be that my equipment setup is less than ideal?

Mini is using a hyped wifi...sure a lot of disturbances around like metal and all

Best, ocusync, that is more stable

Urban environment is one of the issue.

You should bring your drone to another country with wide open spaces. That is the best.

When you are flying it, try to have line of sight between controller and drone. This would optimise the drone range. Also avoid flying with others as their radio transmission can also affect your signal range.

So far, for my Mavic Pro, longest range I went was 1km only with line of sight. Dont dare fly any further due to urban environment. For my other self-build drones, max 500m only cos video transmission very poor after that range although transmitter still in control of the drone..

You can invest a simple Signal Range Extender to tame wifi interferences:

Here was my experience stalking that  BOKA Vanguard vessel over the east coast,  ~1.5KM ( DJI Spark + Signal Range Extender)  🙂
