Good point on selling less cars mean bigger margins which is unfortunately not good for us buyers.

That said, my post was not so much on Komoco’s margin but more on the fact that they have a yo-yo price policy which can swing from thin margins to fatter ones in a short span n hence all the noise about how Avante S can be bought at sub $80k n now why mid $90k? Point is once u sell a car with thin margins, buyer’s perception is “been there, done that so why price so high now?” Something for Komoco to ponder if they read this.

maybe thats why they decide to just sell it at a high price from the start to set the expectation? gotta start from somewhere right just like how conti makes sell at a high price then market with overtrade/big discounts to let buyers 'think' that they got a good deal.  🤣

But Hyundai not Conti leh, how to sell high when they not even considered on par with the top Jap brands yet although much closer these days.

Anyway it’s Komoco’s choice n as Avante is their best seller, they will hv to live or die by their pricing. There has been a lot of comments in this thread already so hopefully some of it will hv reach their ears, cheers!

Quite true, korean car always view as vfm, so if the price too high or on par with jap car or even close to conti car, maybe not many people would buy? Even their specs might be quite good also la.

I observed the korean car models are getting face-lift/change every 2yrs. I wonder the spares will be a problem to source? I would choose to wait for 1~2yr before buying the latest model. I'm desire to own a Korean 8 speed transmission car. Have check with SE, the new Sonata is not coming to our shore. The rating in USA is very good for new Sonata.

I do hope the pallasadie comes. This 7 or 8 seater monster suv.

Bring in the mid spec. Diesel 2.2. Hehe.

See how it sells. I am sure if priced right n speced right. This will beat the alphards vellfires

Pallasadie will likely come. My SE confirmed it. I saw it parked next to the Avante sneak preview room too.

Its a pity that the Sonata wont make its way here. It is a good contender to the Toyota Camry honestly.

My SE told me there were talks to bring in the high spec Sonata in last year. But, I think this didnt went through well.

Komoco have a funny strategy.

Years back, they were infamously known for failing COE bids ie sold cars at low prices but couldn't deliver COE. They then changed tack and became well known for selling cars at good prices/low margins but this time with COE secured. Of course, buyers then used them as an industry benchmark cos besides the low pricing, u needn't get loan, insurance and no trade in required unlike their counterparts at KIA. I think Honda were the only other AD that allowed this at that time.

They then slowly upped their prices and during CB, they suddenly offered low prices again but history repeated itself when they failed to get COE. Now with this new launch, they have upped the stakes again.

Obviously buyers esp those in MCF who are well read, know that Avante can and has been sold at thin margins and expect this trend to continue so when Komoco ups the stakes they are then branded as expensive.

This buyer perception is not wrong and hence Komoco shld go back to the drawing board and re-look where exactly they want to position themselves to be. If they want to be volume seller, then they shld price their cars competitively like before. However, if they want to be abit more atas cos they feel their cars are more worthy of higher margins than they can't be going to and fro between sometimes thin margins, sometimes fatter margins as buyers will feel shortchanged when they buy during fatter margin periods and Komoco will lose these customers maybe forever, my 2 cents.....

Probably got caught out by the unexpected surge in COE and the aggress bidding by premium brands with much larger margins to outbid everyone else... it's a COVID-19 year... anything is possible...

To add on to my previous post, u see brands like Toyota and Honda are very consistent in their pricing. Margins are almost always same bar occasional promos but even then it's at most few k diff only.

The premium makes are cunning, they price their cars with fat margins (i suppose they can do this cos they are premium) and use OT to disguise price changes. Unless u r savvy and have been following closely (but u need constant SE updates for this), it's difficult to know exact margins so in a sense their pricing is consistent. Consistently high at least on paper[:)]

My point is for B&B cars with no OT and no other ways to disguise prices, u got to have a consistent price strategy which I find Komoco is lacking (even KIA is more consistent). Having said all that, what do I know since Teo Hock Seng and team has been in this business for so long!!

Premium brands got an image to preserve mah... so prices cannot be cheap, brand cannot be perceived as 'horrors'... value for money... hahaha... so sneaky overtrades help to preserve the pricing image...

Totally agree... what a pity... but with sedans not as popular as SUVs and with the fantastic new tech in the Sonata, prices are going to be close to $160K levels... no one will buy it... even when my Sonata was $123,999 list price with a $46K COE 4 years ago, I only see a handful of Sonatas - mostly basic models and bought before mine cos a COE crash send the price down to $102,999 for the basic model... even at $112,999 for the top model, panoramic sunroof, blindspot monitor, etc then, which were all attractive then, very few people bit and so you have a model which probably moved less than a 100 cars in it's life span... so I really don't expect the Sonata to make it here again... such a pity...

Probably... there's market for larger SUVs which are mid-market... look at the popularity of the CX-5... more premium than the Outlander but not so expensive like one of the German brands or even their subsidiary brands...

Yes, the price will be a turn off. If the price is going to be at 160k, little will bite and many will probably opt for a junior/compact conti.

The Accord and new Camry (Borneo Motors variant) are good examples.

I am one of those who thought coe  slide mah. But we cant outsmart govt in managing the coe end day. After 3 mths of no coe. And news of less coe to be released despite the 6 bids to be spreas out over a yr.

So less coe means higher coe prices lor

Agree... seems like there was pent-up demand since the economy wasn't too bad before the COVID situation broke out... I think it's anyone's guess how it will pan out after this backlog is cleared in the coming months... but we just have to accept that car-lite will become a reality... and I'm prepared not to drive after this car... probably can't afford paying for road use per km or time unit on the road...

But Borneo Motors & Kah Motors still carry the Camry & Accord respectively... might be what their Principals require since those are iconic models that are part of their DNA... although to be fair Komoco still carries the Santa Fe which almost nobody buys since it's priced close to $160K with a 2.4 L engine that attracts super high road tax that only those with deep pockets don't bother about...
