This time, looks like even the votes from newly-converted citizens were not enough to steer the poll outcome to their favor.

That's because earlier generation of newly converted citizens also grow fed-up with the policies by now [laugh] , so vote against, who knows?

We always think of new citizens as "other" but I prefer to think that eventually they will become more like us with time, with the same concerns and way of thinking. And make no mistake, they may even be more critical and discerning, coming from different education systems and societies.

Importing "fans" is only a short-term fix. Sustaining life-long "fan-dom" is the real challenge.

I hope PAP learnt 2 new things:

1) throwing money at citizens before election don’t work so well anymore

2) the antique LKY way of smearing, blackmailing and threatening don’t work with the young voters, partly thanks to the internet

Agreed with point (2).

Point (1) I staunchly disagreed with you. Imo not enough money being throw at residents. There should be more...much much more ....😁

Lol then after that we get 15% gst? No thanks. This is our own money given back to us

This morning result are they still planning the gst increase?

The immediate action should be arresting nthe sliding economic and not building up the government coffers.

Succession failure is either the fault of pinky, Teo CH or Tharman.

Or maybe this "failure" is not a failure?

Before 10July, someone posted 22 things which PAP needs to do in order to win the votes back from the citizens.

In light of the election results, the list of 22 items really makes great sense and could become a checklist for the party to work on.

Actually it does work.. If don't throw money at citizens, pap vote count might even be lower.. There are actually a lot of people voted pap this time round due to the government give 3k to private hire driver to ride over the difficult period, then also the rental rebate, also can get money for income dropped during the covid-19 period.. Many are quite contended and vote pap.

Hope there will come an era where  voting for pap has become "unfashionable and dated".

I highly doubt many citizens changed their votes last minute out of anger. Singaporeans are not so full of caprice, else we would've changed gahmen a few times since independence.

You might be right about the general COVID-19 effect. People always think "flight to safety" is the overriding factor (and I bet the PAP was banking on that) but I actually share your opinion that many were angry about the ruling party rushing to hold the election now for seemingly selfish reasons.

Anyway, it's for every party to dissect the outcomes for themselves at this stage.

I am sure PAP leadership will dissect, run the numbers and study the outcome in details. If they choose to ignore the underlying, it will be at their own perils.

Many hardcore PAP supporters are attributing the swing to the long queue, the shutdown of 2 pro PAP FB pages by FB (this is ironic given Pofma and what we read day in day out on MM), well it could certainly be as simple as that.  😂

The PAP has painted themselves into a corner. The more they favour FT importation, the more support they will lose from us "true blues". The more they decide to play populist games and keep saying they'll control FT numbers, the new citizens will become beh song as a) they feel singled out and b) as a practical matter, they'll find it more difficult to get their village down here after them like their usual SOP.

So they're really between a rock and a hard place. And I have zero sympathy. 😂😂😂

With regard to the second para, one hardcore PAP supporter here already said that, and I think it's totally illogical. The kind of voter who changes their mind last minute based on a minor irritation is simply not likely to be present in high numbers in our country.

But the general souring of the sentiment apropos of a rushed GE to capitalise on COVID-19 is a definite possibility. And if that's the case, the PAP miscalculated. Badly. A presumed strong factor in their favour became strongly against them.

As to the FB thing, serve the PAP right after all the crap they've pulled on so many others. Orbi goot!! 😂😂😂
