Bridgestone GR80

GR80 is not touted for FC saving qualities. however, being a comfort-biased tyre, it should not worsen ur FC either. my guess is that other factors caused it. maybe diameter has changed slightly, quieter tyres hence drive faster.. etc..

btw, i dunno how worn ur stock tyres are, but i believe the rollng diameter reduces as the tyres wear out. so even if u got exact size as the GR 80, there will be some difference [;)]

I dunno. My stock tires have been delivering consistent FC from day 1 to 50k km.

It's true there are several factors changed besides the tires, eg. changed engine oil during servicing, heavier traffic, more jams, etc. but 1km/l is a lot to me.

I just change to GR80 recently because I really want to reduce the road noise. My car original tire is 175/65/14. Then wanting to get GR80 of the same size but somehow the shop owner managed to convince me to take 185/60/14 as he does not have the size i wanted. Now my FC drop from 13.5km/h to 11.5km/h!!! Suspect due to the wider wheel.

Not only that, I just discovered my odometer and speedometer will be slightly off because of different wheel sizes from my original tire. Now really regretted. I should have insisted on the same size and to go to another shop to find the original size.

But I must say the road noise do drop by ~40% and travelling E-W PIE has never been so comfortable before.

But I am so used to my previous FC that now I want my good FC reading back. I thought of changing to michelin XM1 as it is said to be the lowest FC tire around and is quiet also. Anyone know how much I can get for trading in my new GR80 185/60/14 tires? I have used them for about a month.

Hi Shern25, if you will to go into the standard tyre calculation chart, the formula to either increase or decrease tyre size from the stock tyre but with rim size unchanged should be within 3% max recommended.

The diameter of your previous 175/65/14 tyre is 583mm whereas the 185/60/14 tyre installed is 578mm, a difference of 5mm. By computing the 2 tyres diameter, you will find that it's within the 3% max tolerance.

Assuming that the Bridgestone GR-80 is available in 175/65/14, this will be quieter and better FC than the 185/60/14. Remember that whenever the tyre width is increased and height lowered, you will feel that it is not so comfortable, slightly bumpy and the FC will increase slightly. The other thing that you will encounter is that the acceleration is slower due to the wider tyre contact with the ground.

I have friends who changed their stock 195mm width tyres to 185mm and higher profile tyres but using back the original rim. Reason being that they want the car to be quieter and achieve better fuel consumption.

Thanks Mikeyeo for sharing this info.

So from 175/65/14 to 185/60/14, is there any gain out of this change?

I feel that I have made a mistake to take in what the shop owner trys to sell to me when he does not have my stock size. Now don't know whether to stick to this new tyre for many years to come, or to pay extra $$$ to get GR80 with 175/65/14 now.

Worse, I just learned that the mfg date fo my tyres is 0301, which means made in 2001. I heard that the lifespan of tyre is 6 years, whether got use on road or not. So I have got an expired tyres?

I also read from somewhere that some people wants to go for wider width, lower aspect ratio but same rim size. Anyone knows what's the motivation for this?

Hope that someone out there can advice me on what I should do: to do nothing, or to change.

Oh dear, I think you shd go bk to that shop and demand a good trade in price OR 1-for-1 exchange.

I would not want to risk my life running on a 6 yr old tyre which has its rubber compouid already hardened.

0301 means your tyre was manuifactured on the 3rd wk of 2001.

Care to share which shop is that so that we can avoid it.

175/65R14 comes in very limited brands and models.

I know Goodyear Eagle, Kumho & Yokohama Aspec A300 has this size.

I paid only $60 nett each for my Aspec some time bk.

I don't think it's worth to trade in 1 month old tyres cos u gonna lose a lot. Just stay with them will give u more savings then trading in. The loss on the trade-in cannot make up the difference on your FC.

I'm using the XM1 (185/65/14) for >2 years & although they r said to b energy saving, I found my FC drop when I changed to them from my earlier TOYO normal tyres. So much for the energy saving claims. [confused]

New tyres wil always b quieter but they wil get noisy as they age. Mine still not too noisy but was much better when new.

Better stick with your GR80 until they r worn out then change. XM1 does have pretty good grip in wet & dry though for a non-performance tyre.

True. But the shop will not admit that it is dangerous & u can b sure that reason will not get him any "discount". The shop wil prob con him into getting a "better" tyre & pay more cash.

There is no law that 6 year old tyres cannot b sold or used. Just that they might have hardened but if kept properly, still can use for a couple of years b4 he change. Like this he don't lose so much.

Maybe he sud just give a clue which shop sold him those tyres so we can avoid this shop in future. [nod]

I think I got it wrong about the mfg date. I observe another set of alphnumerics of about 11 digits. Think this should be the DOT code. The last 4 digit is 5006. Another wheel is 5206. The 0301 is an isolated number. So i think the mfg date should be 50/52 week yr 2006 rather than 03wk yr 2001. The wheels looks new to me. Wonder what does 0301 mean?

This new set of tyres is quieter than my stock tyre and over long distance highway do feel more comfort ride. But acceleration is slightly less willing and climbing upslope feels more pullback. And FC is worsen. Just feel that my ride would be more quieter and no compromise on the accelaeration and minimum FC worsening if I got 175/65/14.

i was quoted this amazing price by a tyre shop...

I remember in your earlier post you mentioned 195/65/R15 at S$95.00

Now you mentioned you also got 195/55/R15 at S$95.00.

So which is which? [confused] Are they both the same price? Thanks.
